The S1 Pro Max is recording in HEVC / h265, so consider that if comparing to a AVC / h264 camera. But I agree, a higher bitrate would be nice if Vantrue can make that work reliably.
Would be even better if they introduced AV1 but might be a bit too enthusiastic to expect dashcam manufacturers to introduce AV1 this soon. There are a lot of features in AV1 which would be beneficial to dashcam footage, imo, and it is quickly being adopted by a lot of platforms including YouTube.

@TonyM I have an eventual plan to do this, too. Right now, the E1 Pro and the S1 Pro Max are in two different cars...
 
@EricSan @TonyM , etc I am curious your thoughts. On Viofo and other models, the recording light remains solid. On Vantrue, recording light blinks. I have made suggestion that Vantrue makes this light remain solid green.

Maybe I am sensitive to such things, but I find this to be distracting when driving, especially at night. I have disabled the recording light all together, but I would prefer a solid green light instead of disabling.

Do you agree?

Each manufacturer does things their own way. Back in the day, @Mtz was adamant that cameras should not blink so you can thank him for your steady Viofo light. Street Guardian blink. My Mobius cameras blink. Others are solid. Sometimes a solid light might indicate a bricked camera (if it normally blinks).

Personally I'm OK either way. I leave the blinking led on, except for the E360 where I can't see it anyway since it faces the passenger in the UK.
 
I don't do much night time driving, so this really isn't an issue for me. Having said that, a steady light is less distracting than a blinking light. There are a number of studies in cognitive psychology and perception (on the topic of "pop out" I think) that illustrate this effect.

I would also prefer a solid light, it's less distracting.
I also mentioned this in the past.
With the E360 and the bigger LED it would have really improved it.
Let's hope this gets changed for the S1 Pro Max.

I equate it to the movie theater effect. You're fine watching a film illuminated onto a huge screen , but if someone takes out their cell phone to play on it, your attention is immediately drawn away from the screen. To me, the green light blinking at eye level or there about results in a similar effect. Your vehicle is dark but out of the corner of your eye, you keep seeing the green flash.

With the viofo, I leave all lights on and never notice them.

Exactly. Something out of the ordinary catches the human eye. I imagine it was an evolutionary response. Mankind living in the wilderness needed to be attuned to movement as both hunter gatherers and to avoid dangers of the natural world. Say during ice age, a saber tooth tiger was around, you'd clearly not want to be it's next meal. Likewise, if a deer is in the forest, you need to notice movement if trying to catch your next meal.

Therefore, we're hardwired to look at stimuli in the environment that "pops out" from our normal surroundings.

Do you have HDR enabled at night?

At the moment I prefer HDR on and PlatePix off at night.
 
I'm not a huge fan of platepix myself. I've looked at it and it makes surrounding footage much less visible.
On E1 Pro it seemed to work fine...
 
@Karagandinez I see you have both S1 Pro Max and A329S. Are they in the same car? I would be interested to hear your thoughts on how they compare.
