Well, a supercapacitor is not the only determining factor for warranty duration. No company is obligated to meet another company's warranty terms. A company with high sales but a low cost might offer an excellent warranty or a no-questions-asked warranty, as they know their product is priced to 'move', is popular, and the customer knows the product will eventually fail. These are what I call 'eBay Warranties'.
A company with a higher-priced, better-produced product may offer a 12-month warranty, but it could be very easy to work with them when there is an issue. On any given day, I will go with this option.
VIOFO did not start with that 18-month warranty. They worked up to it, and as I recall, it was in their best interest because of failures we were all experiencing with their product. To VIOFO's credit, they have always done the 'right thing' when it comes to customer issues. VIOFO almost doesn't need an implied warranty, given how they handle customer complaints.
