Because I stopped when I didn't need to. The traffic light only applies to the right turn.
I was misled by the fact that the lorry had stopped, but he was only turning left and waiting for it to be clear.
Also the conditions made it hard to tell if there was a stop line in my lane.

And the lorry could have been hiding a traffic light too......anyone unfamiliar with the area would have stopped I reckon .

Not knowing the rules of the road there, I would have done the same. Better to er on the side of caution.

Yeah , hard to tell if its an intersection or not , when you can't see the other side of the road ( for the other light )

I would have stopped too. I've never see a junction like that, they usually have a permanent green for straight ahead traffic as in this example.

I think the designer of the OP junction should have failed his road design exams.

I'm pretty sure the lights should have a blue and white right turn sign under them (where the no u turn sign is now.)
Better yet, a sign spelling it out as shown here :
