In a another forum we were discussing Chinese Bike Lights how to spot fakes. Since buying a SolarStorm X3 XM-L2 U2 light can bring very varied results, I think worse than dash cams. One member pointed to a Chinese factory even copying the BMW X5, which got me curious so I did some Googling and found something that kind of surprised me. I never thought so big

Back in the days of communism when everything belonged to everyone copying was a perfectly valid thing to do. These days the courts are kept very busy!

As for the BMW X5, I think the courts decided that the look-a-like was OK since it obviously wasn't a BMW and wasn't being sold as one. Most cars have 4 wheels, that doesn't make them illegal!

@Dashmellow I will be honest, I had no idea how big this was. They even made a secret copy of an entire Austrian town

I think the best quote from the articles I read was
"Why? Because they're really, really good at it. The amount of work and creativity the Chinese underworld puts into their fakes is so damn impressive that you have to wonder why they'd ever need to steal other people's ideas."

That Austrian town is certainly not the only one. There are numerous examples all over China including a replica of Manhattan along with the Hudson River!

I don't confess to understanding the culture of stealing intellectual property in China but it has been going on for a very long time in the society and is now being dramatically expanded by the ability to steal designs and actual blueprints via mass hacking efforts. For example, that is how the Zaha Hadid skyscraper blueprints were obtained. It may be impressive that the Chinese underworld, both criminal and state sponsored shows so much cleverness and resourcefulness in doing this but it strikes me as intellectually bankrupt.

It all comes to "R&D", Remember & Dublicate ;)

I have allways felt bad about how we trow our mony avay here in Denmark, but i am glad i am not Chinese as i think i would feel even worse about the same out there.
At least there we are original and leaders in the areas where we have choosen to misspend our mony, and at times i wish we could copy some things from other countries around the world.

Okay China are leaders too in copying, but that in it self is a low status area.
