The VIOFO A229 Duo is the latest dual channel dash cam released released by VIOFO in Jun 2022. The A229 departs from the small size of the A119 series and is a much larger camera with a 2.4″ screen. Most of the A119 series come with a 2″ screen and the A119 Mini comes with a 1.5″ screen. The size difference can be seen in the photo from DashCamTalk member Nigel below.

The VIOFO A229 Duo is essentially an upgrade of the A129 Plus Duo. The A229 uses a Novatek NT96580BG processor, a Sony STARVIS IMX335 CMOS for the front camera and a Sony STARVIS IMX335 for the rear camera. This allows for 1440p recording for both front and rear cameras, one of the first dash cams do do so. In comparison, the A129 Plus Duo, records 1440p front and 1080p rear.
Video Quality
The front camera records 1440p (Quad HD) video at 30fps with an average bitrate of 29 Mbps. Video quality for the front camera during the day is very good and night quality is good. This is on par with many of the A119 series cameras and there is no major improvement here.
The rear camera also records 1440p (Quad HD) video at 30fps with an average bitrate of 25 Mbps. The video is good during the day but average at night. While the rear camera is the same 1440p as the front cam, video quality is worse. The 2 main reasons the rear video quality is worse than the front are the lower bitrate and less illumination as there are no headlights in the rear.
While the 1440p rear video quality is marginally better than the 1080p of the A129 Plus Duo, for many users it may not be worth the extra cost. Also some users have complained that the A229 does not pick up license plates as good as the A119 and A129 cameras.
Features
The VIOFO A229 Duo has a 2.4″ screen, g-sensor and a GPS mount. The camera comes with WiFi and comes with apps for Android and iOS. Unfortunately the Apps are not the highest rated. On the positive side, it does support both 5GHz & 2.4GHz WiFi with the 5GHz being faster to download clips from the camera to your smartphone.
Like most wedge shaped cameras, the A229 comes with an adhesive mount. The camera cannot swivel to record interactions at the driver or passenger windows. Build quality is very good, similar to other VIOFO cameras. In addition, the camera comes with audio and screen error notifications.
As mentioned previously, the A229 Duo is bigger than other VIOFO cameras and is medium sized camera at 99 x 60 x 43mm. The bigger size allows for more heat dissipation and a larger 2.4″ screen. The larger screen could be desirable for some buyers but it the larger camera size makes the A229 less discreet than other wedge shaped cameras.
Like other VIOFO cameras, the A229 Due supports 3 parking modes:
- Auto event detection or buffered parking mode
- Time-lapse parking mode
- Low bitrate parking mode
To enable these parking modes, you will need to hardwire the dash cam to your car (the Viofo 3-wire hardwire kit has a low voltage cutoff and is recommended)
Support
VIOFO is responsive to questions and have adequate support. They also provide regular firmware updates and take into consideration user feedback. VIOFO also provides a 18 month warranty (12 months plus an additional 6 months if you register online) which is better than most dash cams.
Known Problems
While the A229 is new, the A229 series has generally been quite reliable. To date there have been very few problems reported with this camera.

Should I Purchase?
The VIOFO A229 Duo is a decent dash cam but the improvement over the A129 Plus Duo is minimal. While the rear video quality has a higher resolution than the A129 Plus Duo, it is not significantly better. Also, depending on lighting conditions, the A119 series cameras can have better video quality, particularly when capturing license plates.
Given the higher price and similar video quality, we would stick with the A129 Plus Duo. That being said, if you are looking for a camera with a larger screen than the A119 series, the A229 is a reasonable option. To see what other owners are saying, visit our VIOFO A229 Duo Forum.
