Nextbase iQ to be sold in Australia *pukes*

I wouldn't mind if they didn't know they were fake, but did identify that the image quality was only 2K quality, or less. The problem is when they describe the image quality as crystal clear 4K quality when it isn't, which seems to be quite common!

We seem to have another problem with HDR at the moment, not all HDR is equal, and you get people explaining that a Viofo VS1 has HDR which is great for sunny days because it can record the bright sunny areas without overexposure while also not underexposing the dark areas; so explaining what HDR is in photography terms, which isn't necessarily correct for a dashcam. Then later in the video they report that the night time video quality of the VS1 is absolutely amazing for its price, but they fail to recognise that this has anything to do with HDR. You do need to do your research, and it doesn't take long to check out a forum like this. After making a few dashcam reviews, you should know where to find the knowledge, but most of the people who make reviews seem to like being independent, and also most of them like to do a good job for the company supplying the product, while not being very interested in doing a good job for the buyer. This isn't necessarily done because they don't want to loose out on future opportunities, they just view the review as being created for the product supplier, not for the potential purchasers.

Everyone worries about putting their face on camera, but when it comes to YT videos, it really doesn't matter what your face or hair looks like, everyone is different and all faces are accepted. People like to comment on hair, but it is a feature, not a problem.

Now fingers do matter, people do notice band-aids, cuts, bruises, dirty finger nails, un-manicured finger nails, etc., and remember issues with them forever. Best not to put your hands in the video, because the video will be judged by them!

Voice is the most important, you need a good microphone, good room acoustics, elocution lessons...

Some people get away with a poor setup, or even make it a trade mark, but if you want to be successful, it is worth putting far more effort into the audio than the video. Get the audio right and don't worry about the face; some of the best YT videos don't include faces, the best always have a professional microphone and studio setup for acoustics. You don't actually need a good voice, just a microphone setup and room acoustics that make it sound good!
You don't even need acoustics, with a decent microphone and post-production editing you can fix that.

I used to record and edit a podcast and learnt the ropes in Adobe Audition, and the audio came out pretty good considering I had a HyperX microphone mounted on top of a bubble wrap roll, recorded straight into my laptop!

That is fine if you have the microphone close to your mouth, which is easy for an audio podcast, but if you want your face in the video, and the microphone not blocking the view of your face, then acoustics become important. There is no correct setup, and it is good to be different/distinctive, but audio quality is more important than video quality if you want a regular audience.

I’m not worried about my face.
It’s a gag, just like Wilson on Home Improvement. Lol

On a scale of 1-10 rate this video for;

You can still fix a lot with post processing in audition, regardless of where the microphone is. Room echo still happened to a big extent with me even though my mouth was close to the mic.

On a scale of 1-10 rate this video for;
Voice - you are not going to change your voice, so no point worrying about that one!
Microphone - Sounds OK, would sound better if closer to your mouth, which would also reduce the amount of echo.
Room Acoustics - bit of echo, but it is a garage, so that is expected, it would sound wrong with zero echo.
Elocution - could be improved, but most is clear enough, maybe slow down the more rapid bits.
Studio Setup For Acoustics - what studio, it is recorded in a garage! Which is fine, since there are things to look at which should be in a garage.

Overall, if someone is interested in the technical content then they will listen, if you were going to review a dashcam every week and wanted listeners to tune in regularly, it is not the quality of audio that people do tune into just to listen.

Maybe you should copy this style?
His microphone setup looks like this.

You would need a boom mic arm to keep the mic stable to minimise the sound of knocks on the audio, it's very easy for those sounds to to turn up in recorded audio.

Not sure what microphone that guy is using but may have an in built pop filter to cut out the harsh sounds from plosives too

20 years too late, and will be unenforceable
Danes get one of those every 6 month. ( at least )

Latest addition it seem is police can now stop cyclists with no warrant to inspect the bikes VIN number as so many bikes have always been stolen here.
But police here barely have time to attend / investigate serious crimes.

Well jets hope Aussies are too savvy to fall into that trap.

We are just as dumb, I just hope the high price turns everyone off. But of course when the salesman gets a higher commission for selling something of a higher price, they're gonna push hard I'm guessing.

Yikes.

Yep. On paper it sounded really interesting and I wanted to start learning about the nuances. However, once the reviews started rolling in and I realized all the issues it had, I didn’t wanna invest the time and energy to do a video just to show how bad the product was. The way I do tests and reviews take a TON of time and energy. There’s so much junk out there that at this point I try and do the research ahead of time to give me the best shot of finding the best products to share with others.

On one hand I like the PSA type videos to help people avoid getting scammed, but my time is limited and I wanna find the good stuff nowadays.

If people are worried about publishing bad reviews because they lose access to getting products early, their reputation will eventually prevent them from being successful long term IMO. Dashcams are only a few hundred bucks and are readily available online. It’s not like reviewing an expensive rate car or something that can be hard to acquire.

Personally I’d rather be honest with people, even if it means my reviews take longer to get online. Quality, not quantity. To each their own.
Boy oh boy, haven't seen this for a while. This guy practically begging anyone to give them the contact details of reps at Wolfbox

This guy never goes through pros and cons of any dashcams, just shills every one he comes across basically. Infomercial basically.

I understood about 3 words of what he said.

So after the publicised issues that the Nextbase iQ has had, I just was aimlessly scrolling on Facebook when I saw the news that the iQ is coming to Australia, to Harvey Norman.

I can't see this ending well for the consumers that purchase this dashcam..

I was thrilled with the innovation of the iQ 4K Front and rear dashcam. I watched all the online info from Nextbase and also watched excellent you tube videos by Vortex Radar who elicited some great information from the Nextbase rep Jeff Chuh at SEMA 2023 and of an interview with Sam Lewis,(Product Architect Nextbase).
After looking at dozens of dascams the iQ came nearest in theory to what I also chose the premium subscription free trial.

Unfortunately, I became disappointed with my experience.
My rear cam working intermittently.
I contacted Nextbase customer care and a very helpful person went through several tests on the cam and realised that only the front cameras firmware had automatically updated upon installation. He helped me for 35 mins and sent a firmware update to the rear cam. He said if the firmware didn't fix the cam I might need to have a replacement.
I rang customer services back later as the rear cam was still the same and a lady told me that she would get a tech to ring me the following day.
I also received slow motion detection alerts to my phone when my car was parked taking up to 2 mins.
Received about 25% of alerts when no motion had occurred.
Occasionally not recording some motion detection.
Up to 5 mins to upload to view recordings and sometimes not uploading at all (somethings gone wrong message) after 5 mins.
I did not hear back from customer services as promised so after 3 or 4 days I rang to see what was happening. There was nothing in my file notes and as I was getting these other problems I decided sadly to return my items to Halfrds for a full refund.

Some people must keep them, because Halfords are still selling them, but everyone who posts their experience has returned theirs.

The reviews on Halfords have given it 3.7 stars out of 5, that didn't seem too bad, until I read a 3 star review:

  • The camera is very easy to set up and get going. You are given everything you need and the app guides you through the istallation.
  • It seems it does not record each journey - it only triggers when it detects an event. At least, you don’t seem to be able to review journeys if there is something you want to record.
  • The camera quality doesn’t seem great - ok but not great.
  • At night it doesn’t seem to pick much up.
  • The motion detector goes off continually when it’s raining. It does not seem to differentiate between rain and burglars!
  • Also, when someone is standing next to your car, it doesn’t go off once, but continuously every time they move. Not sure if this is a good feature.
