VIOFO A229 Pro FIRMWARE

I've been using an SanDisk 64GB High Endurance Video MicroSDXC for Dash Cam and Home Monitoring Systems - SDSQQNR-064G-GN6IA for updating the firmware that I had leftover from my A129 setup.

Just tried the firmware update on my A229 Pro
Completely failed. Stuck at 10% I ended up pulling the power and just leaving it as is.

These are standard questions when this happens. 🙂

How was the dash cam powered?
Did you format the memory card and which file system?
What size memory card?
Did you do a reset on the dash cam (side hole) and try again?
Did you re-download the firmware file?
When the flash started did you put the dash cam down or did you handle it?

It is same as I said before. The firmware file may have been damaged when you copied and pasted to the SD card. You may use a 32GB card to try the process again.

Using the only 2 cards you recommend or any 32GB card?

With power from the car
Yes, whatever the camera does

no

Thanks.

The dashcam works I'm not going to bother updating it. It works

This glitch never happened for me again.
But maybe I'm just lucky)))
It happened. One time. So it can be considered that this failure cannot be cured by firmware. It's a mechanical failure.

Hi all, bought a 229 Pro (coming from owning 3 A129 pro), it's hardwired and switching to driving to parking mode and vice versa works without issues.

I have a few questions

- On the Viofo app, it says firmware " V1.3.1_241206; V1.3.1_250118"
Why does the app show me 2 different firmware versions?

After a few weeks of driving with the dashcam I wanted to have a look at the files to ensure everything is in order and I noticed 2 things

1. I found 3 instances of locked files (RO folder) where only the front camera footage was locked.
See below highlighted files. That would be a glitch right?

2. Dashcam appears to be taking photos at random. I'm not sure if it's by design or not?
It seems to take photos when I manually lock a file using the physical button on the dashcam. Is this how it is supposed to work maybe?
I had photos taken while driving without interacting with the dashcam (I'd hear the audio sound of a photo taken)

Also, here's a short sample of the first highlighted file in my screenshot above, the file that was locked only with the front footage. Dashcam enter parking mode, 2 beeps which indicates it's locking the file (unsure why, mayge triggered by G sensor when I closed the door), then photo taken. Is that normal behaviour?

Based on the above would you think upgrading fw would be appropriate? My approach to dashcam firmwares is don't upgrade is there are no issues so trying to see if the above points are normal not.

Thanks in advance

The rear camera of the A229 Pro has a separate processor and its own firmware. In the application, the first firmware is the firmware of the main camera and the second firmware is the firmware of the rear camera.

1. The rear camera has an individual sensor as the front one, so there is also a firmware for the rear camera. 2. For the missing locked videos from the rear camera, can you find it in normal vdieos or not? 3. The camera will save a photo when it locks a video as designed, and yes, the G-sensor may be triggered when you close the door, results in locked videos.

What the latest version for the A229 Pro? Can someone link me to it?
Mine is V1.2_240227 for front and V1.0_231207 for rear.

You can download the files here:
EthcamTxFW.bin. Rear camera December 2024
FWA229P.bin Front camera 14.02.25 V1.3.1

Thank you for the reply and clarification.
It's always cool when when you guys reply to customers directly.

Re missing locked video files. Unfortunately right after I posted my message I formatted my Sdcard. Actually even before reading your response, when I finished formatting it struck me that I should checked if the missing locked file was in the normal recording folder :banghead:.

Otherwise I'd like to share another issue I encountered and that one is more serious. While recording in driving mode, sometimes in a middle of a trip I would hear a voice notification "Video recording started 2 channels". First time didn't think much of it. When it happened again I thought it was weird. Normally you're supposed to hear this voice notification when you start the car /start the dashcam so I wondered if the dashcam was rebooting itself while driving.
I pulled the sdcard and sure enough I found compromised video files which matched the moment I heard the voice notification. Every now and then, the the video files (F and R) are cut off by 14s (2 min video files). I noticed them because the size of the corrupted files were smaller than the 2min long video files in the rest of the folder.
Watching the compromised footage, it would be recording normally until 1min 46s and then the video would end. Next video would start 14s later and you could hear the voice notification "video started 2 channels" just as I heard it while driving.
Obviously I would have lost 14s of driving footage.

Can't confirm for sure because when I was driving I didn't check dashcam but my guess based on the above is that the dashcam was rebooting and 14s was the time required for the dashcam to boot back up and start recording. Which would explain the voice notification stating video recording started. (not a heating issue or at least wasn't operating in a hot environment when it occurred, also happened during night drives at 15 degrees Celsius)

I updated the front dashcam firmware to V1.3.1_250214. Firmware obtained here https://www.viofo.com/pages/firmware

And so far it seems to have fixed the issue. No more missing footages or random voice notification stating "video recording started" while driving. I inspected the sdcard and all the filles are 2min long nothing is missing.
And going back to the first problem I mentioned about missing locked files, it also seems that is no longer occurring with this new fw.

So happy with the new fw which seems to have fixed a few bugs.

Though I was wondering why there isn't a firmware for the rear camera available on the official site? Can it be found somewhere else? Noting that I do not want to install beta fw. Only a fw that is made public by Viofo.

Thank you

There is no newer firmware version for the rear camera. If you want to update, you can download the file from this link: https://viofotech.com/download/firmware/A229Plus/EthcamTxFW.bin

For the voice notification during your drive at night, can you check if it corresponds with the time that auto HDR should turn on?

@Arese , I have A229 Pro on 2 vehicles, and I experience the random reboots and random taking pictures/protecting videos even with the latest firmware.
Thermal issues seem to be a contributing factor (less random reboots in winter).
Formatting the memory card seem to improve reliability - but not for too long. And yes, VIOFO phone app even has a setting to set a reminder to format your memory card once a month (an ugly workaround for FW issue. Somehow, my 3-year old Thinkware U1000 never rebooted or required SD card format to work - using the same microSD cards)

Phone app was supposed to be able to fetch the latest FW from server so you can update dashcams with just phone, but the app is never able even to connect to the server ("Unable to connect to the server, please check network connection and try again")

Sigh...

Except for the possibility I mentioned above, the reboot issue is mainly related to the unstable power supply. Please use the original car charger to supply power from your cigarette lighter directly to test if the reboot issue still persists. For your second question, the camera will lock the videos and photo when the G-sensor is triggered as designed, you may set the G-sensor to lower sensitivity to avoid many locked files.
