DR970X Plus gets HDR, firmware 2.002

Why are counterfeits the chinese dascams? Viofo is a dashcam leader and it is a Chinese manufacturer. Is Viofo a counterfeiter?

Not Viofo specifically. But as a personal philosophy I’m just against purchasing from Chinese manufacturers. Everytime I purchased a Chinese product, even “premium” brands, it either had an issue from day one or one that was discovered later down the road.

I just sent my 970X Plus LTE to Blackvue, as it started randomly dying or randomly saying "Please insert SIM card", even though it has one and the Cloud features work. If they offer a replacement, I might ask them to upgrade to the II (and pay the delta), however not sure if its worth it. I spent so much on this dashcam and I'm super disappointed.

For anyone interested, Blackvue received my camera just a few days ago. I was told that when it arrives, they will contact me for options to decide what I want to do in case they find it faulty - before they do anything on their side.

Just a day after, I got an email saying that my replacement had been sent. I immediately emailed their customer support, and they replied after 3 days saying that it was stated in the RMA policy that in case of a faulty product, they will send a replacement.

I don’t understand this - they say one thing and then send me the fineprint that says something else which I obviously missed.

Anyways, will try out the new HDR firmware once I get it and update with the results.

China changed a lot in latest years, their government had some strategies against low quality products.
In dashcam world China is the leader. Only the Cloud remained the latest strong point of Korean dashcam but soon China will be the leader also on Cloud.

BlackVue is trying a lot to reach Viofo video quality but when the HDR was launched by Viofo, BlackVue said it's not important. Now they are trying to implement HDR on a dead horse.

I hear that every time an argument like this comes out, then I waste more money and get disappointed. They’re certainly very innovative and quick advancing, but they just lack the quality standards other brands have. It just doesn’t feel right. They have to go through many years until we can start comparing them to strong European or American brands.

As for the dashcam, I said it before in this thread: if Viofo made a cylinder shaped dashcam, I would definitely give it a try. But their cameras look Chinese, feel Chinese and are utterly ugly. I’m not going to spend that money on something that doesn’t look good.

It's not available on Blackvue's website yet, but I just updated the app and there is a firmware update for the DR970X Plus to version 2.003, says "1. Fixed video corruption under certain conditions."

BlackVue app has also updated to 4.12 on 22nd July.

Well guys, I’ve just updated my Dashcam to 2.002 and it completely bricked it. I mean everything is working and I can connect to it, but the picture is blurry it’s overexposed and it’s trying to regulate it automatically, but yeah it’s simply unusable now. Tried to restart the Dashcam, reinstall the firmware again no luck. You can see in the pictures one in the fields is before firmware update and the other one after the update.

Have you tried updating to 2.003?

Have you tried updating to 2.003?

They appear to have the LTE version and LTE version is a number behind.
LTE - 2.002 (2025/07/23)
Non-LTE - 2.003 (2025/0723)

Yeah, 2.002 ist the latest firmware for me. Since I bought the Dashcam in January 2024 directly from Blackvue I just sent them a message. Will wait for a answer and share it here with you guys. Hopefully they will release a fix for it soon or replace the Dashcam. I suppose there is no way to install an older firmware, correct ?

You can install an older firmware, it just overrights.
The issue is trying to get a copy of the older firmware as BlackVue annoyingly remove them from their website and only ever list the latest ones.

Try and keep you own copies on your PC/Mac for reference in case you have any future issues

Oh, ok got you.

Would you happen to still have an older firmware version available? Ideally one from before the big HDR update – since that seems to be where most of the issues started for many of us.

No sorry, I've not kept them for a while as I've not had issues.
I'm still on 1.008 but I don't have the update file saved

There is a very noticeable low-light capture quality improvement in the latest 2.003 firmware release.

Australian site lists the old versions for download:

@Vortex Radar Yes, I can confirm everything that you’ve written here. I was so happy to see them bringing out the HDR feature after more than a year and now this. It seems that nobody is testing the firmware before they release it. I mean we don’t even have a CPL filter for it.
Try Amazon UK for DR970X-2ch Plus Series filters they dispatch them from their American site £47.02 for front+back, just received mine.

That's not a Blackvue filter set, and I was looking at those from Amazon Canada & US (closer for me), and the few reviews were pretty brutal. Essentially, the front filter is too big and doesn't actually fit. (https://www.amazon.com/gp/B0DJY1D7SQ)

The same (probably) set is at AliExpress: https://www.aliexpress.com/item/1005008990576085.html vastly cheaper.
Next time I do an Ali run, I'm probably going to get a set since they're cheap enough that it's worth a risk and maybe I can modify it to fit better. I'll report here if successful.

One key thing is the Amazon listing references the LTE variant but the Ali listing specifically says it's for the non-LTE variant (I have non-LTE).

BV's site *used* to list a CPL filter, and I believe I saw it on BV's France site just recently, but it disappeared.
