DR970X Plus gets HDR, firmware 2.002

Moovika do very good CPL filters for the BlackVue.
Both LTE and nonLTE models (LTE has a larger lense)
They're a French company, but ship worldwide.
You can buy on direct website on their eBay shop.
Not sure if they have Amazon shop or not

That's not a Blackvue filter set, and I was looking at those from Amazon Canada & US (closer for me), and the few reviews were pretty brutal. Essentially, the front filter is too big and doesn't actually fit. (https://www.amazon.com/gp/B0DJY1D7SQ)

The same (probably) set is at AliExpress: https://www.aliexpress.com/item/1005008990576085.html vastly cheaper.
Next time I do an Ali run, I'm probably going to get a set since they're cheap enough that it's worth a risk and maybe I can modify it to fit better. I'll report here if successful.

One key thing is the Amazon listing references the LTE variant but the Ali listing specifically says it's for the non-LTE variant (I have non-LTE).

BV's site *used* to list a CPL filter, and I believe I saw it on BV's France site just recently, but it disappeared.
I fitted mine on this morning as said, and yes they are a nice tight fit and very secure, but what a difference to image quality.
On box statement

Many thanks for that, and to Dan about the Moovika pointer. The latter appears to only be available via eBay to me, but that's acceptable.

I assume you have the non-LTE camera? Why the heck the addition of LTE support to the camera required a change to the lens size is a mystery we'll probably never understand. 🙂

The firmware update fixes the image corruption for me. Picture looks solid (super clear) at night now.

I did a remote update to 2.002, the front camera is really washed out with HDR on. Unfortunately I don't see an option to disable it. Do these people even do QA testing before releasing these things?

Well guys, I’ve just updated my Dashcam to 2.002 and it completely bricked it. I mean everything is working and I can connect to it, but the picture is blurry it’s overexposed and it’s trying to regulate it automatically, but yeah it’s simply unusable now. Tried to restart the Dashcam, reinstall the firmware again no luck. You can see in the pictures one in the fields is before firmware update and the other one after the update.
I have the same problem with the LTE, check my last post

They do have a lot more work to do, attached example is from a non-LTE running firmware 2.003

I'm looking through some sample footage with the DR970X Plus with 2.003 now and I'm also still wildly unimpressed.

The corruption issue is fixed, but there's still ghosting/artifacting in the daytime, lots of exposure flicker in the daytime when it adjusts for shade and sun, lots of grain at night, harder to read moving plates at night compared to the A329S, and I can't read plates when I pull up behind a car at a red light with my headlights shining on the plate.

It reminds me of looking at older dashcams from years ago. Definitely not on par with the video quality from other modern dashcams.

For the past several years, Pittasoft has been saying they didn't need HDR because the image quality tuning was so good, but it wasn't good [many examples supplied to them showing it wasn't good and only a few examples of it being "okay"]. When they finally implement HDR [which should have been there all along], it's not very good [still need to update my units with the later firmware]. I'll update one of my DR970X Plus units and join the "HDR" crowd to see how it looks. I was really hoping adding HDR would be a giant step forward for them.....:banghead:

I'm surprised at the no before after YT videos on the updated firmware.

For anyone interested, Blackvue received my camera just a few days ago. I was told that when it arrives, they will contact me for options to decide what I want to do in case they find it faulty - before they do anything on their side.

Just a day after, I got an email saying that my replacement had been sent. I immediately emailed their customer support, and they replied after 3 days saying that it was stated in the RMA policy that in case of a faulty product, they will send a replacement.

I don’t understand this - they say one thing and then send me the fineprint that says something else which I obviously missed.

Anyways, will try out the new HDR firmware once I get it and update with the results.

Updating here (since this seems to be the "main"/"hot" DR970X Plus thread now... the replacement camera also randomly dies. I believe it can't handle the heat in my country (35 degress ceslius all day baking in the sun).

Waiting for Blackvue to tell me how to grab logs so they can see what's wrong instead of giving me automated replies... their customer service became so horrible.

Blackvue AU replaced my package last week (front, rear & card). The old unit would randomly reboot whilst driving (20mins drive with car coming our of a cool garage and air-con on) could hear the boot voice message, and was physicaly very hot to touch. GPS functionality would also randomly drop-off..

Something else I noticed only after having the new device installed was the very noticeable increase in video transfer speed between device & mobile. Old device would take ~2 minutes to transfer a 1 minute 4K file to the iPhone (sitting on the windscreen next to it). New device tranfers the same file in ~25s....

Australian summer heat is most likely affecting the circuitry, even though my car windscreen has solar control glass (blocks out 95% of UV light and ~75% of IR), with all other double-glass windows tinted, so heat isn't an issue.

No video quality difference/improvement with new unit, and it came with 2.003 pre-installed.

This is the same exact issue I have - the camera randomly says "powering down" (sometimes not even finishing the whole sentence), and going off for a few minutes. Then, after a random amount of time, would say "Blackvue for your safe driving" and boot on again. This is very sporadic.

Unfortunately, the replacement unit also has this issue. I really don't know what to do - their customer service doesn't really understand my issue and all they can offer is to send a replacement again.

@Vortex Radar at least on a Mediatek dashcams, the HDR can not be implemented after. There must be something hardware on the PCB when creating the camera to have HDR. Just an example: Viofo have HDR on all models except for the WM1. Do you think they are not smart enough to add HDR on WM1 as they did on all other their dashcams?
This is why I don't expect Blackvue to have real HDR on their actual models. As @rcg530 observed, they were arrogant when people told them about HDR so they need to suffer a little to learn the lesson in the hard way.

So I’ve been told there’s another fw update coming to help with the video quality.
Great, thanks for the info. It seems they really need to hire someone who knows how to work with the Starvis 2 sensor…

Hi all – new here and picking up on this thread re 970x latest firmware….

Does anyone know – or is it known – if the 970X Plus Box will get the v2.xxx firmware..? I think I like the form factor more, the smaller cam units, heat resistance etc…But it would be nice to have this up to date firmware re HDR, SD card capacity, etc…providing they can fix the issues at present! 🙄

It surprises me the Box doesn’t seem to get as much attention as the standalone models….

Just a follow up re 970 Box – is it possible to plug another 4K ‘front’ camera into the rear port for a 4K/4K setup…or would the CPU have a meltdown..?!

Cheers,
