DR970X Plus gets HDR, firmware 2.002

So the DR970X Plus II has recently been released, and it turns out that the DR970X Plus and DR970X Plus II share the same firmware files.

In this update, we've got faster booting, 1 TB card support, HDR, and external GPS support with the CM100GLTE. It really surprised me to see HDR now available for the original DR970X Plus, not just for the newer DR970X Plus II. This also means that now I have no idea what the difference is between the original Plus and the Plus II, other than the new USB power cable, lol.

I went out to go update two DR970X Plus' and sure enough, we now have HDR! There's also an HDR stamp at the bottom of the video. Here's a screenshot from this morning, before updating:

and here's another from just now with HDR:

Additionally we now get GPS being utilized if we have a CM100GLTE plugged in. Previously its GPS was only for non-GPS dashcams like the Box models, but I've been wanting to use it, especially on my rear cam, since the Blackvues struggle to get GPS connectivity in my car for whatever reason. That doesn't happen with any other dashcams sitting right next to it, just the Blackvues. So for that reason, I just plugged my rear CM100GLTE back in and hope it finally helps to resolve my outstanding GPS issues on the rear cam.
Doesn't the Plus Series 1 use Ambarella H22 SoC? and for that reason couldn't feature HDR (like the U3000) and came up with the marketing proposition focusing on 'Extreme 60 mbps Bitrate', etc?

Technically, there should be no way to switch on HDR via the AP. It's likely ISP which explains all the grainy footages at night.

When I saw your post, the first thing that popped in mind was 'Sigmastar'. Hope they sort things out with the Elite 9.

That is good news on HDR… Im looking to upgrade from my 900X plus and torn between this one and the Viofo 329… I like my LTE connection so Ill probably go back to blackvue.
Yes the GPS for blackvues is very finicky… I have to unplug my Uniden R8 until GPS connects on the blackvue… and with all the radars and dashcams you run with I can only imagine you never get GPS on blackvue.

In theory, there shouldn't be GPS conflicts between radar detectors and dashcams. It's really about ensuring that they all have good line of sight to the sky and there's nothing in the windshield glass that prevents RF transmission.

With Unidens and Blackvues specifically, we do sometimes see Ka falses on the Unidens when the two are close together and you have the Blackvue set to 5 GHz WiFi. If you space them out a bit, switch to 2.4 GHz WiFi, or disable WiFi on the Blackvue altogether while driving, it addresses the Ka falsing, but that's also separate from GPS.

You would think but it is definitely an issue with blackvue. My previous blackvue had the same issues. Powering down the R8 until I get a GPS blue light on blackvue then plugging the R8 back in keeps the blackvue happy for a week or so then it does the same thing and I have to do the same disconnect.

I'm on my 3rd 970x plus in 8 months. The first one on 1.x firmware would randomly reboot whilst driving (sometimes multiple instances on a longer trip) and get very hot to touch. When it was replaced I also noticed how slow the wi-fi had been at transferring files. The second (on 2.x firmware) had similar issues but with random loss of GPS issue thrown in. Had the 3rd unit installed last week and haven't driven much since, but no doubt it too will die. I'll wait for a few more replacements, before taking action against them with the local consumer watchdog, to have mu purchase refunded and move-on.

Their warranty service whilst excellent (very quick at replacing faulty units), isn't enough to cover the design flaws.

We just entered spring here in Australia so temp's are relatively cold (10-18c), but I have no doubt there will be more failures when 30-43c summer temps arrive. I think it all boils down to the Blackvue design of cramping everything in to their smaller cylinder shape. This worked fine for the earlier models, but addtional processing need for 4K and with it more power hungry circuitry arrived, the need to dissipate heat increased. Their current physical device simply can't dissipate the generated heat fast enough so ends up with the device shutting down to protect itself. They needed to build a larger physical device or build their electronics for operating @ higher tempeatures (addtional $).

Unfortunately due to it's its nature, the device ends up restarting (instead of say a PC which would shut down and stay off) and having to continue recording whilst overheating, which over time degrades the electronics. There're no real fix for this generation of devices. Pittasoft are going to continually replace systems under warranty, till such time as the device is no longer covered.

Had their box version been available locally when I purchased mine in early february, I would most certainly have bought that instead, as the electronics would have been tucked well away from the windscreen.

I have the impression that the non-series 2 firmware update is an ISP effect (fake HDR), not real HDR.

It's like 10% HDR effect with a balance of 90% ISP tuning.

I received my third replacement as well. I would've gone for the box version if it was out when I initially purchased this camera - seems like the right choice.

In terms of heat dissipation, nothing beats a Vugera SV2 Pro.

I just had an LTE one fail, it must be a design fault. The interesting thing to me is that the sim card inside (telstra) has gone from white to brown which suggests massive heat issues. While ABB replaced it on the spot it (they seem to be excellent at warranty issues) it failed sometime in October when it wasn't even hot in Perth. Even putting your hand on the camera you can feel how hot it is on a mild day.

I got a completely new replacement for my LTE DR970X-2CH-Plus and after 2 weeks of intense heat, the camera says "Please insert SIM card". Last time it happened, I had to get a new SIM card. I believe it's frying the SIM card and I no longer have cloud capabilities.

What do I tell their support? They said they're not familiar with heat issues on this model, even when I linked them this post...

Do you reckon the BOX model is a better choice? It doesn't have LTE which I really like, but I can't work with these heat issues...

So just a small update.

After 3 iterations of the LTE DR9X0-2CH-Plus, they all either reboot randomly, or the camera starts saying "Please insert SIM card". I don't know why Blackvue don't admit that there is no issue, after me and several people here suffer from the same issue. My guess is that the camera, along with the integrated LTE module, can't sustain the windshield heat in warm countries.

I received the Box model last week and I'm going to install it in the upcoming days and see if that works. I really like this design and I would've purchased it if it was available when I first purchased the camera. I'm giving up LTE connectivity for this setup, as it requires the LTE module to be separate and I don't want a huge square stuck to my windshield, so I'm still considering on that part.

Old thread but do we know if the 970X Box supports HDR with the latest firmware?
Unfortunately, No.
The box version didn't get the update to 2.0 firmware, which introduced HDR mode.
So it's stuck on non-HDR.
