My 0826 failed to start up, giving continuous high frequency beeping & I cannot switch it off or shut it down!... I think it has gone into self destruct mode & getting very hot.... I can only hope the battery dies soon or the noise is going to drive me mad!

Sometimes when they do that you can reset them by holding the power button for around ten seconds - it will have died by now but something to try if it happens again in the future.
There used to be a timing issue on the 0806 which caused the same problem, and they fixed that (as far as I know) but not sure if the same team was responsible for the 0826.

Agree with the Reverend.... Either wait for the battery to die or do a hard reset....Hold power button for about 20 seconds....all should be okay after that.
