It's all well and good sleighting the cop but he only had a split second to react, it was dark, his car lights created shadows...
The old boy was out, he'd taken a step then reached in & started to pull out what 'might've' been a rifle.

Did the old boy really need to get out? Did he really need his cane? He didn't have to walk anywhere & could've just as easily leaned on his vehicle for support.
Also, we don't see the run up to this incident - why was the guy being stopped? - this might have a bearing on why the cop felt he might be in danger.
I'm sure these questions and many more have been asked.

Watch any video of cops being shot at and you will realize why they need to act fast. Not all cops are perfect, yet we ask a lot of them, who we pay so little. Imagine every person you approach is trying to hurt you.

Awful incident, thank God he is ok.

Only ever had a couple of dealings with police, always been polite, apologetic etc - it goes a long, long way.
"Imagine every person you approach is trying to hurt you." I'm sure they don't waste their time pulling drivers for every tiny thing, this guy must have given the cop good reason, hence the cop approaching with hand on gun - I guess?

I've known a few cops and their stories you would shock you. Imagine that daily and everyone you meet you can't trust. I give them all the respect for working to protect us.

I know many will say they're dishonest, etc etc. True, yet dial 911 and watch how fast they come to put their lives at risk and save yours.

The police already have a huge tactile advantage over the old timer. It was in the evening and there were like 10 bright lights pointing at the truck and into the truck's mirror to further blind the man. The old man wouldn't have hit anything anyways if it were a real gun.

Looked like a shotgun to me to when it was swinging toward the camera. The officer was trying to tell him something before the shots, it was probably stay in the car. The officer reacted correctly to the perceived threat. Anytime a police officer pulls someone over they never know what they will get and always have to think that the person will attack them.

What I've learned from officers I know...Dont get out of your car. Put both your hands up high on the steering wheel so the officer can see them and see that you are not making any threatening moves. Dont reach over to get anything! Dont lean over to open your glove box to look for your insurance information, wait until the officer is at the car then tell him what you are doing and why you are doing it. This relaxes the situation a lot and usually has the added benefit of helping whatever charges you are going to get to be lessened or dropped. Trust me, most police officers really appreciate this simple act.

Personally I am glad to live in a relativity non gun based society. The police here do not draw weapons first.
