Hi All

I'm from Australia (Sydney) and looking for my first dash cams for two cars, this is what I'm after:

- Hot day won't break it
- Front and back camera (so either 2 cams or a dual camera)
- Good day and night vision (to record number plates for collisions)
- Something that will work with tinting on the back window

Really, all we're after is a good basic dash cam to record collisions in all weather that will last

The Mini 0805 looks good, except for the possibility of a focus issue.

Does anyone have any ideas/tips/suggestions?

Thanks a lot

Welcome to DCT

Hot day won't break it
I got 2 Viofo a119s there has been sitting in my cars almost every day since January, frosty and very hot days. There are working 100%
I got a mini 0906 dual camera, there has been working the last 3 weeks in hot days, without any problem.
I got a very new Viofo WR1 wifi for a week and its has been working without any problems. Will get some hot days now 34C

All of them has good night vision since there using Sony IMX 291 or/and imx323. Check the model. All of them use Novatek processor.

- Something that will work with tinting on the back window
I have a dark tint on my cars, no problem a day time, but limit vision at night time. But good enough to see car very close or in street light.
Here is a link where I compare a119s vs mini 0906

If you chose 2 single camera, the clip will not be in sync.
With WR1 you can change settings from a smartphone from the driver seat, if it mounted at back.

Viofo WR1 & Mini 0906 should be in production now and in store shortly.
Viofo a119s is available now.

Its your money, so do some research by you self, this forum is a good place to get the information.

Buy local if possible and make sure the place where you buy, can give you a good after service if needed. It might cost a little more, but these money can be very good give out.

Gday, and welcome to the forum.

You will not capture any plates at night, at least not unless the crash happen at a combined speed lower than 10 km/h

As a Aussie and even in Sydney i would just go for one of the up coming SG9663DC from the Aussie brand Street Guardian, should make up for problem free running, but if you get a issue you might even see the boss himself at your door to remedy your problems. ( if he is home that is, that guy almost travel as much as Santa )

even see the boss himself at your door
Maybe a personal installation by the boss him self. Service level has just come to a new high level. Just kidding.:D

Well i do have a feeling you could get technical assistance by the guy, not least if you bait him with a cold one or two. :D

Blimey, Gabacho ... I'm really hangin on the Day I come in here .. and have the pleasure of seeing and reading one of your messages/posts ... that are more than 3 words long .. or 2 words and one of these :D hahaha
I wanna see this bloke actually work for ... and earn his likes .. Give me something ..? lol

Now, for actually contributing something myself ... err.. ----> :D How's that?

Nah ... Having Dark Tint can't be good at Daytime ... let alone Dusk and Night.
Number plates and facial recognition would be out .. for sure.

Hi Guys

Thanks for the warm welcome :)

How much money do you want to spend?

I'm willing to spend about US $300 per car

Sounds good, I'd prefer something with local support. Do the 2 channel cameras still suffer from pixelation and other problems? (This was why I was considering two singles). We're also looking at having them installed by a standard auto-electrician - there's no need for a specialist install is there?

That's unfortunate seeing the cameras are a security thing - if someone rear-ends the car and takes off, the number plate would really help with identification

Thanks a lot guys

The new ones based on the new hardware do support the higher bitrates needed to fight blocking, but the bitrate will not be higher than current good single cameras ( 15 - 20 mbit on each camera )
SG are defensively a company the Aussies can be proud off, customer care and service that's second to none.

I still think if you go tear assing down one of those tree lined roads in Wollemi National park you will still get a high chance when all that data overwhelm the sensor and SOC, but it is what it is, and you can only get around that on a select few dashcams by using a modified firmware that really crank the bitrate up there, and then you will see 3 minute files being around 1 Gb in size.
And the camera will be running so hot i doubt it would last one Aussie summer, cuz you will be running bitrates that's 2 - 3 X of the stock MAX for that camera.

There are a little footage from the new dualchannel camera in the SG9663DC subforum, but as i recall none of it are from really challenging locations in regard to making the Sensor and SOC work overtime.

Best and still recommended for low light crashes and so is to spot the license plate yourself and call it out for the camera microphone to pick up.
This is based in the limits of the hardware used in current dashcams, and it will plague us for quite some time to come im affraid.

Just one of those dark cloudy days are really enough to start playing havoc with plate capture, off course there are a range of parameters in play in this regard.
Some days i have reviewed dashcam footage and been thinking surely i have no plate captures in this crappy weather today, and then wouldn't you know for unknown reasons i can actually read many a plate on other cars in my footage.

Installing a dashcam are not that bad, if you have a little DIY skills and a little box of hand tools you should be fine even if you wish to hardware and tap into the car fuse box.

There are a range of these DIY videos on youtube.

To not get any macroblocking in heavily tree lined roads at all requires very high bitrate, better to wind things back a bit for practical reasons

Yeah, it is what it is, and its not like good cameras go all minecraft on us, i guess its just like low light problems, you cant quite get what you would like, at least not without it having a 1500 USD price tag.

I ran 40 mbit i think it was a few days on the joovuu X and that still dident fix that issue  and it cranked out like 1.2Gb 3 minute recordings, and thats eating up your 64Gb memory card pretty fast.
So i will settle with the 3 - 400 Mb files a sane camera generate, and be happy there are none of the forest that once covered Denmark left, now its just a plantation here and there and sone hedges.

Damn, I guess I'll just have to give up the tear assing in the corolla then ;)

Not too sure about the DIY , but I'm pretty sure I'll be going with the SG9663DC, love the fact that its local. Has anyone used the BLACKVUE DR490L-2CH?

Thanks for all your help guys
