Horrible motion blur? Normal?

Hi,

I recently bought an A118C clone on Amazon.

I've noticed the videos have pretty poor bit rate and really bad motion blur at the sides, making it pretty much useless as you can't make out an detail.

I've got the latest firmware installed.

Is the camera defective or just a cheap clone knockoff?
 
I don't recall exactly but it was February. Updating the F/W didn't change anything as far as I can tell.

You would probably be better off going back to the seller/manufacture to get the original F/W. Not all firmware is compatible with all cameras as the internals may be different even for the same model designation.
 
I think I might just return it. This video was recorded using the same camera and the motion blur is still evident when you pause.

I don't see anything unusual with the video. Motion blur is normal in dashcams, especially so at higher speeds and lower light levels.

How's this for motion blur - a screenshot capture from a near-miss I had in 2015 (cam was a Nextbase 402G / DOD LS430W which some people rate highly - not me, I should add!):

I have a Viofo a118c and the low light performance isn't that great. Lots of footage you will see online is from wide open highways with clear skies from the US.

With cloudcover, any time you have trees or high bushes around it will lengthen the shutter speed to the point where you get motion blur. Light levels are also dropping fast at 20:00 in the evening.

Until they put adjustable shutter speed limits in dashcams, the only thing you can do is to point the camera upwards so it meters more for the sky.

Low light performance of most cheap dashcams will be like that and even good dashcams won't be able to catch plates like that in high speed.
I have used cameras costing $10 to over $400 and none can do it.
If it's bright sunny day, yes, otherwise no.
Good cameras will be better but not as good as what you want. I mean what OP wants even if he returns and gets something else.

That video looks fine and it's normal no matter what camera you get.
You could improve exposure by angling it more down when sky is that white to make videos brighter.
