My previous dash cam had a setting that allowed it to continue recording off battery for ___ minutes after I shut off the car. How do I get my GS1000 to continue recording?

Mine has firmware version SMH3.33.120312A.

Thanks!

So my firmware doesn't have that function? Is there a firmware I can flash to get that function?

flashing it with a firmware from another camera (even if it looks the same) is an easy way to brick your camera, best to contact where you bought it from and ask if they have any update available, they're very often what you see is what you get but you never know, don't ask, don't get

What is the name of your camera?
Usually name is at the first screen when you turn camera on, or maybe right upper corner of recorded video.

But first you should backup your current firmware, this is maybe the point you can come back if something goes wrong.
Other thing is check does this directusb program work in your camera, this is possibly the second point to save your camera if something goes wrong.
All necessary info is here.

I'm pretty sure mine is an Old Orange Menu model.
The menu looks like this: http://i.imgur.com/chqex4Y.jpg
The bottom right of the video looks like this: http://i.imgur.com/hUg3M8F.png
Firmware version as seen here is an Old Orange Menu version: http://i.imgur.com/oEQqi1R.jpg

I don't see any brand name or logo on the box or camera but does branding beyond "Old Orange Menu" matter?

I see on the F500LHD info page it mentions the setting I'm looking for:
To automatically turn off when disconnecting the external power supply: SHUTDOWN – choose from: 10s , 5 min, 15 min (10 seconds is recommended.)

But the GS1000 info page has no such mention. Do any of the GS1000 Old Orange Menu firmware versions have the feature I'm looking for? If not I might just buy an F500LHD as a replacement...

I have that option, so it does exist.
I asked brand because i have firmware witch i know it works on 10 or so different cameras and i wanted you to confirm that is your camera one of those, but now it is unclear if there is no camera brand name available.
But start with firmware backup anyway.

I was also surprised that my camera didn't have the feature. To get an idea what settings I have to work with on the camera, the menu layout looks exactly like this guy's menu:
viewtopic.php?f=2&t=47
except his firmware is a New Orange Menu version number.

The most relevant looking item is of course "AUTO POWER OFF" but that definitely doesn't do what I'm looking for.

Sabe, good to know that there is some hope for me. :)

For what it's worth, here are pictures of the box and stuff.

Perhaps i can _try_ to help you, but only after you confirm that you can backup your firmware, and let know is directusb program working or not.

yes the auto power off is only for when running on batteries, nothing to do with switched power

a power on delay but no power off delay, not sure what they were thinking

the box pictures don't help unfortunately, that's a public box that any assembler has access to

Thanks! I'll remember to bring the camera to my computer tomorrow and see. Quick question though, does Direct USB work well on Windows 7 x64 or should I run it in Windows XP?

only runs on XP

It is always dangerous to update firmware and you should realize that there is three choices as a result:
1 Everything works and you be happy with new firmware.
2 You disable you camera but you can recover it after many hours of work.
3 Camera is bricked permanently.
That's why you should study both ways to work with firmware beforehand and check that they work if needed.
Personally i would first backup old firmware, then try to update camera again with that same old fw again, and if all that works then you can proceed.

I observed today and the camera says "iTracker" when it turns on. Does that help identify it?

I understand the flashing risk and thanks I'll first try backing up and flashing the backup tonight.

That's a good thing. I have three of same brand and this is newest firmware to iTracker.

Now i only assume that your camera is using the same hardware than new iTracker, but i know this camera is quite safe to handle.
Here is to do list.
1. Backup old firmware to be safe.
2. Download new fw from my link above.
3. Name it as "vfirmware.bin" and copy it to camera tf card root directory, make sure that camera battery is charged.
4. Start camera, it loads new firmware automaticly and camera shuts down.
5. Remove vfirmware.bin from memorycard, otherwise camera loads firmware again at next boot, you can connect camera to pc or remove memorycard and do it in card reader.
Now put camera on, language is russian, change that and rest is clear.
I hope.

Wait, your linked bin filename indicates the version is v4.36 which is for the New Orange Menu. As the info page says,
These firmware files are only compatible for cameras that have the Orange Menu and existing firmware of 4.35 or above. IF THE CURRENT FIRMWARE IN YOUR DASH CAM DOES NOT START WITH 4.35 OR HIGHER, DO NOT UPGRADE YOUR FIRMWARE.
and
Do not try to apply a 4.35 firmware to a camera with an existing 3.3 firmware.
Mine has a v3.33 firmware.

Are you sure flashing that file is safe for my camera?

Also, Direct USB detected the camera saying "AMBA device found!", was that all I needed to test?

Thanks!

choose Upload and make sure you can copy the existing firmware off the camera

I don't think that's working then... this is what happens: http://i.imgur.com/2ehlk7n.png

The output file ends up being 2048 bytes in size instead of something like 13.2MiB.

I have the board.ini file copied in as instructed. http://i.imgur.com/dldnmeI.png

I'm not sure, maybe someone that has done this on your model before can advise, I have my own firmware so not something I've ever needed to do, there may be some process specific to your camera, the process with my camera doesn't match what's listed on the site here so possible there are some variations depending on your hardware
