Well I previously tried a 27mm CPL filter and decided to try something different to allow a better quality CPL to be fitted.
I drive a VW CC which has a very sloping windscreen and causes lots of reflections of the speaker grille etc which causes most dashcams I've tried problems. For some reason the Novatek 96550 / Aptina AR0330 combination seems to suffer the least whereas the Ambarella A7 & Aptina AR0330 / Omnvision OV4689 and Novatek 96550 and Sony Exmor really have issues with detail due to noise reduction trying to clean the image.
I used this thread as a base:
http://dashcamtalk.com/forum/threads/diy-step-up-filter-ring-adapter-cpl-filter-for-dashcam.3380/
I have a DSLR camera with a 52mm fitment and decided to try and buy something which would let me use the same lens as that to get more use.
The thread lists the LS430W as having a 39mm base and the LS460W is the same and so I found a 39-52mm step up adaptor from Jack the Hat here:
http://www.jackthehat.co.uk/stepping-rings-from-25mm-105mm-p-460.html
I then read some reviews of CPLs, and Hoya are a well regarded brand. The lens I bought (Hoya HD) is totally overkill for dashcam use but it is here:
http://www.hoyafilter.com/hoya/products/hdfilters/hdfiltercirpl/
The reason I picked this is that it is supposed to let more light through than most CPLs in this price range so in theory hopefully means the cam will still be sharp at speed using faster shutter speeds.
My one year old is running riot around me so this was a quick bodge job - so far no vignetting to be seen.
The real test will come as we do some driving today and at night - if it doesn't kill night ability I'd be more than likely leaving it in place but we shall see.
