Well I previously tried a 27mm CPL filter and decided to try something different to allow a better quality CPL to be fitted.

I drive a VW CC which has a very sloping windscreen and causes lots of reflections of the speaker grille etc which causes most dashcams I've tried problems. For some reason the Novatek 96550 / Aptina AR0330 combination seems to suffer the least whereas the Ambarella A7 & Aptina AR0330 / Omnvision OV4689 and Novatek 96550 and Sony Exmor really have issues with detail due to noise reduction trying to clean the image.

I used this thread as a base:

http://dashcamtalk.com/forum/threads/diy-step-up-filter-ring-adapter-cpl-filter-for-dashcam.3380/

I have a DSLR camera with a 52mm fitment and decided to try and buy something which would let me use the same lens as that to get more use.

The thread lists the LS430W as having a 39mm base and the LS460W is the same and so I found a 39-52mm step up adaptor from Jack the Hat here:

http://www.jackthehat.co.uk/stepping-rings-from-25mm-105mm-p-460.html

I then read some reviews of CPLs, and Hoya are a well regarded brand. The lens I bought (Hoya HD) is totally overkill for dashcam use but it is here:

http://www.hoyafilter.com/hoya/products/hdfilters/hdfiltercirpl/

The reason I picked this is that it is supposed to let more light through than most CPLs in this price range so in theory hopefully means the cam will still be sharp at speed using faster shutter speeds.

My one year old is running riot around me so this was a quick bodge job - so far no vignetting to be seen.

The real test will come as we do some driving today and at night - if it doesn't kill night ability I'd be more than likely leaving it in place but we shall see.

In initial testing the reported ISO inside the house goes from 80 without the lens to 150 with it - so it's still knocking it back a step or two. It's a nice day so hopefully I'll get some useful footage today!

It's a 39-52mm step up adaptor, and o ordered the filter from Amazon because there do seem to be lots of fakes of these things around!

I'll get some video uploaded tomorrow night so you can see how it performs - please don't buy just yet in case it isn't great :)

And that ebay one is cheap - I paid almost double that as I was in a hurry, but it took me two weeks to fit it :D

So you say this is a fake?

All the sellers sell this filter for 45$-50$, and hundreds of people had bought from them.

The adpter ring with the filter causes to the image to be cut on the sides?

Well that was a success so far - reflections reduced and details retained from what I can see with minimal blurring.

I'm at the other half's where she has crap internet so just a few raw videos for now.

I've uploaded a few pics to show plate capture etc in motion is still not bad.

Is the top video of the two with motion detection set to off?

This is what I get in daylight

Video seems better quality if viewed directly on youtube

@santer
clearly better quality than my ls460w
while driving are all signs clear to see
they are not blurry at pause

Signs seem clear though number plates would need a magnifying glass at a safe distance to follow at. Mine is set to 50Hz and motion detection set to off and LED was set to on.

The version information is

FG1406260EN11

So the HOYA filter is relly better?
Focus and blur problem is because of the FW or the Hardware, its possible to solev it with FW update?

I think the blur at certain times of day is more firmware and basically in my limited knowledge of how these things work it's doing the following:

1. The camera detects the light levels are low, ie just after sunrise or just before sunset, and basically it tries to keep the lighting at a constant point.
2. To keep the camera providing a lighter image, it keeps the shutter open longer - this is a brighter image, but also causes more blur of close objects while the shutter is open.

When the image gets brighter, it changes the shutter timings so it's faster and you don't get so much blur.

If you look at all the bad screenshots it's nearly always when there are loads of trees around darkening things or when it's going dark - I've not seen the problem in bright daylight so much (if at all).

The issue with focus after the camera is turned on are due to cheap plastic lenses, or maybe a production fault. In all fairness the replacement LS460W hasn't had this problem so much yet, but the weather has dropped. It did sit in the sun on Saturday and I checked it by firing the car up and doing a walk past and it was fine and in focus - maybe it's just a bad batch that the UK reseller had and newer ones are better, or worst case they've all got the fault!

It now looks like there's a problem recycling files on a 64GB card at 2 mins, more testing needed there.

Customers can now buy a custom made lens hood for their DOD LS430W and the LS 460W. The hood is special made
and fits perfect. The exact diameter for the LS430w is 35.45mm and the LS460w is 35.30mm. So we had to made 2 sizes
to let it fit perfectly. We made a serie of 100 pieces. What do you think about it?

That looks very good and will definitely help a lot of DOD owners if they need a CPL :)
