Hello everyone!

I subscribed yesterday here after finding so many informations about the dashcam I'm interested in.
I've always wanted a dashcam so I started searching at first on Youtube and then after many researches I found this forum.

After doing some researches and looking at this topic : https://dashcamtalk.com/forum/threads/what-to-buy-sticky.10618/

I decided I'd like to get the A118C, since it's my first camera I want something cheap that works well, from what I read here on forums it's working great and developers update its firmware and also post here on forums. Since I'm pretty sure I'm going to buy this one, I'd like to ask some questions first.

1) I read that this camera (like almost every dashcam) have a loop recording, it saves a clip if it detect a strong movement (am I correct?) but I'd like to know if it's possible to save a clip manually, I mean I'm recording automatically, I see something interesting and want to save that, is it possible?

2) I saw that there are two versions, one with capacitor and one without it, what is it?

3) Considering that I live in Italy, are there some trusted sellers of this cam in Europe and for a good price? I looked at some of them and saw that it's also in Gearbest, I know it comes from China, but it's cheaper there.. But there are so many models and I read that there are some fake ones, which one of this would be one with the latest updates and fixes?

4) If you do know some other sellers, I'd be happy to see them, and I'd really like to know which is the best version for this camera since I saw that there are some with updated hardware that fixed some issues and I'd like to avoid fixing said issues by myself.

Thanks and I hope I did well in my first post here.

U know the A119 plus GPS is a new model and its better in every way. The A119 is much better in my opinion and has upgraded parts inside. Maybe $10. more Better to buy with a capacitor NOT A BATTERY just google A118C verses A119 to see the comparison Or go on this site under the heading "home" and there u will see a box to compare

I agree with Sutton that the A119 is a much better camera for only a little more money. I own both A118c and A119 and I much prefer the 19.

but to answer your original questions...
1) yes, you press the middle button labeled with a triangle and ! this will lock the current file and prevent it from being overwritten. sometimes you have to click the button twice - once to wake up the screen, and again to actually lock the file.
2) you should only buy the one WITH capacitor. the battery version will wear out faster.
3/4) Lots of people here have had problems receiving items from Gearbest. My A118c actually came from Gearbest via a raffle they held here, and it arrived just fine. I'm sure others have had no trouble with them either. As with any vendor in china, there will always be problems, so just be careful. and yes, there are fakes of teh a118c and there's no way to know if you got a fake till you receive it and open the case to check which chips they used. the A119 is still brand new so there are no fakes yet.

Thanks for the answers. I checked a bit the prices of the A119 and they're a bit higher than what you said. I checked this: https://dashcamtalk.com/b40-a118/#Should_I_Purchase

And prices from amazon.uk are around 50£ (or 55 euros), what I was looking for more or less.. But for the A119: https://dashcamtalk.com/a119/#Where_to_purchase_for_lowest_price

It's 75£, 25 more :) I probally missed a link of a lower price, where'd you get it if I can ask? And Gibson do you remember which one you bought? I mean which one between the many a118c in Gearbest website.

Thanks for answers, I'll keep the a119 in consideration too

Go to SpyTec.com or (Capture your Action who is always on this site) check out the prices. Don't know UK prices compared to USA prices.

if your budget means you can't afford the A119 and want to stay with the A118 make sure you buy the Viofo version, the others are the cheap China copy and there is no support for them, the Viofo A118C will cost a bit more than the others you see but it costs more for a reason, it's the better version

Thanks for answering.

I'd like to keep the prices low since it's my first cam, but if you suggest me to get the newer A119, so let be it the first one!
I will get that in the next two weeks I think.

I'm not interested in the one with GPS, so is this A119 the correct one? It was linked in the homepage of the website.

https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/B01IM2EPJO

so far we don't know of any knock-off copies of the a119 because it's so new, so any of them you buy should be the real thing. if it turns out to be defective for any reason, amazon is great about returns, so that's a good place to buy from. way better than any of the vendors in china, since they want you to pay very expensive return shipping in case anything goes wrong.

most of the time, you get what you pay for in a dashcam. cheap is usually junk, and more expensive is usually higher quality and more reliable. not always, but most of the time.

Okay thanks everyone. I'll let you know when I get it!

Hello,

As I said two weeks ago I decided to buy the A119, but before I confirm the payment I'd like to know if those two items are good for what I want to do:
I plan to hardwire the dashcam into my Clio and I saw that there are a lot of tutorials around, I think I'll be able to do this by myself.

I'm going to buy this with the GPS: https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/B01IM2EPQW
And the hardwire kit is this one: https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/1550063227https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/B00MH4ZVHO
Do I need both items to correctly hardwire the dashcam?

And another question: is it true that if I hardwire the cam it'll be able to run 24/7 without giving issues to the car battery (even with the car turned off)?

Thanks.

Yes, you need both the fuse-tap and the hardwire kit. The fuse tap will connect to the red wire on one end and the other end to the fuse being tapped in the fusebox. Black wire is ground/-ve.

If you connect this two wire kit to a permanently live fuse, the camera will stay on 24/7, which isn't recommended for the health of your car's battery or the camera. In order to use parking mode (unbuffered motion-detect in this case), you need to get a hardwire wire kit that has battery discharge prevention and low voltage auto cut-off built in, eg. Vico Power Plus.

Thanks for the answer, so the hard wire kit I linked earlier won't be good?
If I found the correct item, the Vico power Plus costs 50$ so if buying that is the only way to hard wire the camera properly I won't hard wire it for now..

The linked hardwire kit is good for hardwiring to a fuse that's only ON with the car running or in ACC mode. With the linked kit the camera will turn OFF too when the engine is turned OFF. If proper parking mode is one of your main requirements, IMO you should be looking at the Thinkware F50 within this price range.

Okay thanks for clearing this out! I was interested in having it turned on 24/7 but it's not a must for me. I'll buy this kit so I won't have to see wires and it'll work when I'm driving. Thanks again.

You can use a 15A fuse on the dash camera side, but it's best to use a 5A or less fuse.

Yes, I know that 20 A is a lot, but I've seen almost everyone suggesting that item. I would attach that one the the fuse box of the car, so if I got it right attaching the 15 A I got would be fine anyway, right? I just want to be sure that I don't mess up anything
