Sometimes there are not many satellites about, plus atmospheric conditions are poor, plus there is a solar storm, plus some people live in the far north where GPS accuracy is poor. So I think 40m radius is actually on the low side, no need for a whole km though! I'd go for 100m, although of course for some people, 100m is still well within their property!

My preference would be user specified, but if not, maybe options for 50m 100m, 200m, 300m, 500m, 1000m (1km) or in imperial 100ft, 200ft, 500ft, 1000ft, 2000ft, 3000ft.

GPS receivers in phones are accurate to within 3m/10ft which is how navigation apps are able to put us on the right road or even right section of a split lane highway (eg express vs local). 40m / 130ft should be easy under most conditions. I don't know the chip in the A139 but I suspect it's just as sensitive.

Even phones have difficulty in garages, especially underground ones!

I don't know the reason for choosing 1km, I'm just pointing out that it is not quite as simple as it first appears. It was worth making the point though, these posts do get read.
