Painting Black Over White Oval Thing on the Front

I successfully sharpied over the shiny silver surface around the lense. Now I noticed there's a white oval thingie on the front. What is it and is it safe to black sharpie over as well?
 
Over the white oval "flash light" I just used matte black tape.
 
It is an LED light , if you never use it you can just cover with a bit of black pvc electrical tape.
 
What's LED light for?
