Running Mobius with no battery and powering it

So I got my cam yesterday but haven't mounted it as of yet. I plan on having the mobius permanently mounted with the lens relocated out of the case. But before I spend any additional $$ I would like to take it for a spin.

I currently have 3 devices close to the rearview mirror which I would like to power

1. Dashcam (Mobius Mini USB)

2. Bluetooth Speaker (Motorola roadster 2 micro USB)

My ideal setup would be to have one cable going back to fuse box and connect it to a fuse that always has power using Add a circuit aka add a fuse. On the other end I would like to split the cable to the 3 different devices and attach it with it corresponding charging connector and for the mobius I was thinking of taking out the battery forever and just leave it with external power. I figured this will not give me any overheating.

Now the question is how big fuse should I use. I was looking at all the out put of this devices they use the cigarette plug and the out out on them is 5v but my car is 12v. And the amp it anywhere from .5amp - 1amp.

My idea is to run phone cable I believe it 24awg use 2 pair for negative and use 2 pair for positive and split it on the rearview mirror side to the 3 devices. I'm open to suggestions.

Sorry if I sound like a complete idiot, but im not all up there when it comes to V/AMPs I get confused. I hope my explanation give you and Idea of what I want to accomplish or even if it possible. I think all the devices together is less anywhere between 2.2 amp - 3amp (this is really exaggerated).

I might be wrong, but I'm almost certain the majority of the heat generated within the Mobius is from the video processor chip- not from the internal battery charging. (The heat sink on the Mobius case is also "attached" to the video processor IC.)

the battery generates little heat when charging, nothing in comparison to the CPU and CMOS, having the battery powered constantly has greater risks though that have nothing to do with the heat it generates
 
Regarding heat I guess I will make holes all over the case and if the cmos makes most of the heat it will soon be out of the camera.

Regarding cable. I made a test cable here is a picture.

I tested the cable and every worked. The problem is the radar needs 12v to work. Since my table wall charger only does 5.6v it just powers the radar for a fue seconds and then tell me low voltage and turns off. I guess connecting the radar wont be a problem, but if im not mistaken the Mobius need 5v and my BT speaker also need 5v. What can I do to step it down? Or do I need to step it down.

Please be careful - you're going to end up frying something when feeding incorrect voltages into sensitive electronic equipment. I would only be using the proper approved USB power supply for the Mobius (1 Amp rating I believe is specified.) I would also advise against running multiple items in parallel off a common power supply. You can end up with all sorts of problems.

So you need a 12V->5V regulator. There are multiple ones available. The question is: can you find one you can hide up behind the mirror? That way you just run 12V up to there.

You are worrying needlessly about the current draw. The first reason for the fuse is to prevent a fire if the wire shorts to ground, so 5-10A is fine. In theory it should also protect the electronics but not really. If you want, wire up everything and measure the current with cheap DVM [free-$4 at Harbor Freight], but that's overkill.

Ok so I finally last week finished my wiring in one of my cars. I used the fuse which is always live and controlls my trunk door.

I use a Cat5e cable and use blue pair for 12v and brown pair for 5v. Used a dc12v to dc5v. I mounted the regulator right next to my fuse box under the dash and ran a cable to the review mirror. I terminated into a RJ11 Jack and put the 12v on the inside pair pins 2-/3+ and the 5v in the outside pair pins 1-/4+ connected to a splitter then fab a 4" cable for my radar detector which uses 12v and rj11 and fab other 6" cable for the mobius which uses a 5v, one side of the mobius cable is a RJ11 and the other end is mini USB.

I will post up pictures later on today.

My only problem is that I run out of memory. I currently have 64gb micro SD in it. But I get about 9hr of video.

With 64GB, if you switch to 720/30p at the lowest data rate, you should get over 24 hours of time before the hit the memory limit.
 
I saw a video loop options in the software, but how does loop work. does it loop the 5min or does it loop after the memory card is full? Isoprop doesn't have this mode in his manual.

It creates files based on the loop size specified. It can loop in 3, 5, 10, 15min or max out to the 4Gig file limit. When the card is full it will delete the oldest file and continue if you have it set to loop record. Typically for dash cam usage 3 or 5 min would be best.
 
Yah i did a test today and this is actually what happens. I had a old 8gb card and this is how i was able to test.

Are you using a LAN/ telephone splitter for DC power connections?
 
Be careful as Cat5e cable really isn't designed to be used for supplying power - let alone using with a 3 way splitter to power 3 different devices. You could run into problems with drawing too much current through the splitter (voltage drops/ contacts over heating etc.)

It will be fine nothing to worry about. I dont know if you know this but there are things called POE (Power Over Ethernet) which use cat5 cable to power AP (Access Point aka wifi) and they carry a lot more power/amps. Also im limited by 3 amps as the fuse I used is not any greater. I have been running this setup un my other car for over a week with no problem what so ever.

People even use cat cable for speaker runs. I just need to find a 3 way splitter so I dont have to use other splitter into the splitter.

Yes, I'm aware of POE.

I personally would still be cautious - especially with a three way splitter. The contacts inside that type of connector don't give the best surface area contact and could cause problems with a higher current. The Mobius alone is specced at requiring 1amp and (from other posts) doesn't like any voltage drops through cabling. How much current are the other devices potentially drawing?
