Somthing to think about

Excellent! Clever use of technology there too.

yep.

But i have to admit i dont know why so many ppl have ther damm " elektronic turd" on while watching a movie in a Cinema, but i assume they need and get way more than the 2 calls i get on average every week on mine.

I am so happy the fjew ppl i know respect my hate to the cellphone, and only call me when it really really really cant wait.

Thats fake, can't broadcast a message to mobile phones like that.

Actually can in Australia too but it's only used for emergency purposes, the anti spam laws we have prohibit unsolicited messaging

Good point/question.

To target specifically the cinema audience they must have the means to extract the viewers mobile number from the data mobile phones use to maintain it's link to their mobile provider. Scanned when the audience all walked in the door perhaps. Once those numbers were collected, it would be simple to broadcast an SMS to them all at once.

Such scanning for numbers like that I would imagine is a big no-no here in Australia and most advanced nations with privacy protections in place.
Maybe there is tight controls on who can use such equipment? Even in HK.

this kind of thing relies on a cell tower transmitting to any suitable device in range, same way they do bushfire alerts in Australia, they don't need to know your number or your location it's just targeted to any device within range of the transmitter, they'd use a femtocell or similar for this application, in these areas it's not uncommon for there to be cellular repeaters in the premises already anyway

Ah yes. And being a cinema each room would be impervious to mobile signals. a) so that mobiles aren't normally usable during movies, and b) the broadcast message is confined to that room. Otherwise the rest of the complex would get it too. That also explains why so many of the audience still had their phones on.

I used 2 way communication in cars while working for many years...I was paid, trained & experienced in it, I would never do it now that I'm retired & out of practice....besides the fact that I only have a throw-away cell phone that's only used to call for road-side assistance.

Except for an extraordinary emergency, the public has no need to use phones while driving, handheld or not...why that isn't banned, beats the hell outta me ?!?@??$%

Or maybe each of the viewers got a free ticket. But they had to give their mobile number. They could have used a program to send an SMS to all the ticket holders at once. The laptop looked like it had a list of mobile numbers. The antenna broadcasting box could have been a fake and was just a film prop.
