U1000 making screeching/crackling/weird noises

Just had this start happening to my U1000 about a month ago as well. Thinkware gave me the same options for $160 repair or 40% off new camera. Figured at that point, I might as well take the camera apart and see if anything jumped out as being wrong. Sure enough, there's a little 3V rechargeable coin battery in there and it was completely dead. New battery cost $2.50 + $6.99 shipping. I replaced the battery about a week ago and haven't had any static sounds since.

hi, new to this...but was the battery prong soldered to the board and did you have to melt it out first then solderer back... not professional here but willing to do this if i can prolong its life, just out of warranty by 4 months and thinkwere is saying tough **** LOL... and definitely not giving them any more money with that attitude... any insight would be great ... just want to have all the items on hand so when battery arrives i am ready to go.

Yeah, the battery prongs are soldered to the board. Just watch some YouTube videos on SMD soldering (surface-mounted devices). I used solder wick to remove all the existing solder from the terminals so that the battery could be removed, cleaned the connection points, then soldered the new battery in.

I think everything I needed was as follows:
- Solder
- Soldering Iron
- Solder wick
- Battery
- Small tweezers to hold/position the battery

Here are two videos on how to solder, and one more focused on replacing a battery, the process is similar.

Another thing I would recommend if you don't have the best eyesight is a small magnifying lens to help inspect the solder joints for shorts.
Two big tips are having a clean soldering iron tip, a clean tip makes soldering much easier, and Flux is your friend. Use as much as you need and then clean it off when you're done.

I had the U1000 for almost 2 years now. Started to have the weird sound after I off my engine for about 3 months ago ever since I change my car battery. I had change the small battery of the U1000 but still having the weird sound. Feeling disappointed now.

We do apologize for the inconvenience. Have you tried to reach out to the shop where you bought it? to see if they can offer a replacement or a repair service?

Hello everyone,
I had change the small battery on my U1000, works fine for 1 or 2 weeks, after my U1000 stop working, dead unit, i don't know why ?

1) I bought new was defective returned
2) Installed new one, warranty was passed by 1/2 months paid to have repaired.
3) Installed repaired unit. Lasted only a few months not working.
4) Warranty repaired installed. Let me see how long this one will last.
Seeing a trend? Quality issue or Design Issue?

Hi Everyone,

Sorry to dig this thread back but. I just want to let you know that I've same problem with this thread (squeaky/cracking noise after unplug power).

I solve by replace super capacitor in unit has 3V 10F (dimension 10*25) before I replace this I replace backup battery but not solve issue until I replace capacitor.

Now my U1000 work perfectly and no more stupid noise anymore 🙂
Below is my replace cap for your references (purple is new, yelllow is old)
