Vantrue E1 Pro / 4K / Novatek NT98528 + SONY STARVIS 2 IMX678 / HDR / Wi-Fi / GPS / PlatePix™ / Voice Control / Support LTE / Video and Screenshots

The lens holder and the lens itself are plastic.

The heat from the video sensor is not removed anywhere at all, except to its board. The 70mai a810 device has the same video sensor, and there is a radiator there to remove heat from the video sensor.
Thank you for these detailed disassembly photos and insights. The E1 Pro is a decent dashcam unit, but as you explained it has limitations with heat dissipation.

I encountered fairly high temperatures in my testing here in the hot Australian summer heat, which are pretty much explained by what you have dissected here.

Yes, the device will heat up, but it has the potential to improve heat dissipation. You can make heat dissipation from the processor directly to a massive radiator, which, in turn, will be cooled by outside air through holes in the case under and above it. You can also make heat dissipation from the video sensor to the radiator. But I would start with changing the power supply circuit on the video sensor board, because one of the converters immediately after switching on begins to heat up a lot.

The suction cup mount with built-in GPS for E1 works perfectly with E1 Pro except for the possibility of connecting the LTE module.
But if you use E1 Pro in rental cars, the LTE module will not be needed.
Another advantage of the suction cup mount is the ability to install E1 Pro on both horizontal and vertical surfaces.
Power is supplied to the mount.

In general, I have several comments on the operation of this device. And if any of the Vantrue representatives read this topic and are interested in improving their device, write to me, I can tell you everything. Although, I can write right here. And if there are Russian-speaking people in the team, I would prefer to communicate in Russian, because I have to use an automatic translator, which can distort the meaning.

Thanks for the disassembly photos @JeWell. I was contemplating disassembling mine just for the fun of it. Once you’ve disassembled a few devices like this, there’s a predictable pattern to them. It’s curious to see that there indeed a captive battery and the size/capacity of the super caps (7.0F!). The construction shows the challenges of dissipating heat with such a small package. I was assuming the main heat producing chip was directly coupled to the outside chassis, I didn’t realize there was an extra layer of metal in there and two layers of thermal interface paste. It’s fun to see the actual implementation of design choices and all of the engineering that is involved!

@JeWell ... thank you and much respect for the disassembly and break down photos of the E1. Not many of us are willing to do this; it is a great opportunity for learning, and for understanding the design and build quality of these dash cams.

So... you're always welcome! You can send me any devices that you're interested in for disassembling, photographing and forming an opinion on how the device is made. I repair electronics (including soldering under a microscope), at the moment I repair stationary video surveillance cameras. And car DVRs are my hobby. I buy different devices to study the inside, compare them in operation and assess the overall quality. Also, all the purchased devices help me in repairing other similar faulty ones. And, of course, I use DVRs in my car myself, and not just theoretically discuss them and their image quality and correct operation.
Specifically with this E1 Pro there are several critical remarks - both in the design and in the software. I would like the manufacturer to eliminate the annoying errors. But, unfortunately, the experience of communicating with Russian "manufacturers" (who in fact are only resellers of finished products from China and Korea under their own brands) says that no one needs anything at all. You write to them about errors, and they answer - "we know everything better ourselves." And after some time, after one and a half to two years, they take into account the wishes and correct their errors in existing or newer models. Passing everything off as their breakthrough discoveries. This applies to video recorders, radar detectors, and combo devices (which are very common in Russia). Therefore, I do not want to impose myself and write to Vantroy myself. I already wrote once with a request to provide me with this model for testing. But was completely ignored. Therefore, if a company needs information on existing errors, I can only share it upon request.

PlatePix_off+HDR_on vs PlatePix_on+HDR_on

PlatePix_on vs HDR_on

Very very good video. Platepix makes a Lot of difference in the daytime (alone). I freeze framed and you can most definitely read the license plates better.

With Platepix vs HDR the results are very similar.

Would you be willing to run these same tests at night time? I'm curious the results.

At the moment, my E1 Pros are installed in different cars and I have not planned to install them together yet.
Maybe later, when the corrected official firmware is released.

There were several warm days in our area.
The temperature outside was somewhere around +27 - +29 degrees Celsius. The temperature in the car in the parking lot was of course higher,
but I did not measure it. The sun in the parking lot was shining through the windshield on the E1 Pro.
The E1 Pro worked in the parking lot in the mode: "Recording with low bitrate", in a closed car for more than 6 hours without problems.
Let's see how it will show itself at higher temperatures.

Over the past several months of use, I've had no complaints about the E1 Pro's performance.
The model performs its intended functions without attracting any attention.
As users write in the 4pda thread on the Russian forum:
Turn it on, set it up, and forget about it!
