Vantrue S1 Pro Test & Review PP

@Jeff_Vantrue
In this post I will discuss difficulties I experienced trying to update the firmware of the S1 Pro.
Shortly after opening up the Vantrue smartphone APP on my iPhone SE 2020 iOS 13.5.1 I saw there was an available firmware update.
I decided to try the OTA (over the air) method.
I was able to download the update to my iPhone.
However when I tried to send the update to the S1 Pro it failed repeatedly.
I decided to update the firmware the old fashioned way by downloading the update from the manufacturer website, transferring the update to an SD Card, and interesting the SD Card into the S1 Pro.
I went looking for the update, and discovered there are three different Vantrue websites, and none of them had the firmware update for the S1 Pro.
1.) https://www.vantrue.net
2.) https://www.vantrue.com
3.) https://www.vantrue.us
How confusing is that for the average consumer?
C’mon Jeff how about just one website?
After consulting with @rcg530 he advised me to try the OTA method with an Android device, and sure enough it worked on the first try.

There's two versions of the Vantrue app on the Apple Store.
The version 2+ didn't offer an update for the N5 but the other app just called Vantrue worked perfect.

I'd like to know which app you have installed.

Cheers

Speak of the devil.
I just pull up the APP, and noticed there is a new OTA update for the S1 Pro.
It updates successfully on the first try.
I guess they figured out the iOS issue.
My device is a iPhone SE 2020 iOS 13.5.1.
See attached screenshots.

The A119 Mini 2 has the best NIGHT TIME image quality of any dash cam on the market.
The A139 Pro has the best DAYTIME image quality of any dash cam on the market.
I'm testing a new dash cam that is looking better than both of these DAYTIME & NIGHT TIME.
Don't ask. lol
Good, I can sleep tonight

Same thing happened on Android when my Nexus 4 Pro arrived. Saw the two apps but read the description and when it was last updated, to rule the older VantrueCam out.

That being said, totally understand why it would be confusing for the new user when they got their dash cam. Which app do I use etc...

Vantrue S1 Pro Front STARVIS 2 (IMX675)
Resolution: (2560x1440) 30fps
FOV Specification: 160° (actual 140°)
F1.8 Aperture
Firmware: ECH-281
HDR: ON
CPL Filter: OFF
1 Minute File Size: 106 MB
Recording Bitrate Fixed: 14.1 Mbps

Viofo A119 Mini 2 STARVIS 2 (IMX675)
Resolution: (2560x1440) 30fps
FOV Specification: 140° (true 140°)
F1.6 Aperture
Firmware: V1.0 0605
HDR: ON
CPL Filter: OFF
1 Minute File Size: 213.9 MB
Recording Bitrate Variable: 28.5

In this scene the S1 Pro is overall brighter.
There is more detail in the trees, and bushes.
However, it comes at a cost of overexposing the illuminated price sign.
The A119 Mini 2 is slightly darker, but the illuminated price sign is clearly legible.

Wow stark results. Not sure why Vantrue can't jack their bitrate up to get better details though

It's not Vantrue.
I've tested dash cams from every major brand, and a lot of Amazon Junk.
BlackVue, Thinkware, FineVu, DDPAI, GNET, RICILAR, Pilot, and others.
Nobody can touch Viofo on Bitrate.
They usually run double, or triple the Bitrate of a comparable dash cam.
It's also why Viofo sometimes overheat.
They run the processor to the redline, and then back it off just a bit.

They do provide the option to turn the bitrate down, for people who live in hot places, which probably includes yourself.

Nexus 4 Pro, even in three-channel mode and 4K resolution, has a fairly high bitrate.

Have the N4 Pro and notice that, decent cam

This was discussed months ago on here and at thatpoint in time the other version was the latest version and the latest updated.
Ideally it would seem to make sense for things to be sorted out. Perhaps @Jeff_Vantrue could advise his guys to make it obvious the correct one to use. Perhaps one of the apps gets deleted to reduce confusion and loss of functionality like firmware updates working on one version and not the other app. IDK

Things are going from bad to worse for the S1 Pro.
I’ve noticed a new problem, that a firmware update will not be able to fix.
In addition to the S1 Pro’s HDR not working to resolve the illuminated price sign, the lens is producing a “mirrored lens flare reflection” in the center of the image whenever there is a bright light source.
You may not see it in the screenshot, but in the video it will become apparent because my arms were getting tired holding up my test rig, and I’m moving ever so slightly.
In this footage you can see a mirrored reflection of the price digits from the sign.
I wonder if a windshield in front of the lens will further exacerbate this issue?
I looked at all the test footage I recorded with the Viofo A119 Mini 2 during this outing, and there is no lens flare to be found.
Hey @viofo how come your camera does not have this lens flare like the S1 Pro?
Is it because you are using a higher quality lens?

This happens on the Nexus 5.
I mentioned it in one of my demonstration videos.

The screenshots look identical and the older one says it supports E1, E2, E3 etc but the new one has the complete list of new and old devices so to me it seems the old one is completely redundant.

It's not like you need to retain lots of user settings or files from the old app for those devices (since they are on board the cameras themselves), so it would make total sense to delete the old app from App Store and Google Play Store. They need to make it happen

In this post I would like to discuss an error I think should be fixed with a firmware update.
When enabling the Wi-Fi to use the APP the LCD Screen displays “5G”.
This is incorrect, it should say “5GHz”.
5G and 5GHz are two completely different things that will most likely confuse the average consumer.
5G is the 5th generation cellular / mobile network.
5GHz is a radio frequency, (2.4GHz is the “other” one).
C’mon @Jeff_Vantrue how about adding the Hz?

I noticed that too, meant to point that out in my notes...was a little confusing when I first saw it but then figured it out :-)
