What video editing software is everyone using?

At one time I used PotPlayer and it was a decent product but because I use a reverse firewall, I noticed that it was constantly phoning home and trying to connect to unknown servers.

Eventually, I came to understand that PotPlayer is likely malware/adware. There is some debate about this and discussion of false positives, etc., but I now avoid it completely, especially since I got a new computer.

It may depend on where and how you download PotPlayer, but considering how often it is tagged as problematic I believe it is best avoided.

How To Remove PotPlayer Adware

What is PotPlayer?

If you absolutely have to use PotPlayer, the last known adware/malware free version is PotPlayer 1.7.18958 and disable automatic updates.
Anything after is malware/adware and should be avoided like the plague.

Disclaimer:
I have not used it recently and don't have it installed, but I know this was the case 3 years ago.

"Potplayer" works for .ts files, and IIRC may have file conversion options. Jokiin liked "handbrake" for converting files, I never tried it.

Losslessly? I wouldn’t want my conversions to unfairly reduce video quality just so I can load the videos into a video editor when making a review.

@Vortex Radar, I have the K-Lite Codec Pack Basic edition installed on my Windows 10 editing laptop. I believe that's how I ended up getting the TS files to play on my Windows 10 laptop.

Handbrake is generally good, it uses ffmpeg, but it is not clear if it uses ffmpeg in the best way.

I use ffmpeg directly, then I can be sure that it will convert .ts files to .mp4 files in original quality without recompressing, it will also join several files together into one, which is ideal for the B4K files, but also useful for other cameras since it will also concatenate .mp4 files.

A Windows batch file for anyone who is interested:

Don't be too afraid of re-compressing. Cameras use a compression that they can implement in low power and real time, so they don't get as much compression as they could for the same quality level. Using a better algorithm on your edited video can get you near identical picture quality in much less space at the expense of processing time. Your computer has much more processing power, and no power or time restrictions since it does not need to get results in real time.

The whole point of a lossy compression codec is to delete details!

Preferably unimportant details, but it is up to the codec to decide what is important and what is not, and it might not agree with your view of what is important, especially if it is a codec in an editing application. In our dashcams, at least the good dashcams, the codecs are optimised to store the details important for evidence purposes while driving, a very different situation to what you find in a TV studio.

You can get lossless compression codecs, but they can not compress nearly enough for sensible video storage, so all our dashcams use lossy compression codecs and they all delete detail.

Vastly over simplified.

When driving there is never a static background Download older versions of VN app, and yet our dashcam codecs do provide decent compression.
So I've started playing with video on my Android and in looking for video editing software.. just something free for now to play with... kinda like a movie maker on iOS. I've googled and tried a bunch of "free" stuff but it either has crazy watermarks or requires in-app purchases. I've downloaded about 8 different apps and none have been free. Ideas?

It costs time and money to make an app so I doubt you'll find anything worthwhile that is free.

You need to be looking at GPL licensed software. I use KDENLive: https://kdenlive.org/en/ This is available on Windows, Mac & Linux, but not Android.

Are you trying to edit video on your phone?, tablet?, Chromebook? I would think those are rather under powered for video editing.

Just checking F-Droid for video editors on Android (keep in mind that I have not tried any of these), I find "Open Video Editor", and "Bunny Media Editor",
