That was the question that my dumb but hot co-worker asked me when she saw my 2nd new dash cam. I had no answer for her, so I guess I'm dumber than her?

actually in defense of the name, the very first dashcam I ever saw in use was literally a dashcam, I was in Saint Petersburg Russia for a trade show about 7 years ago and a taxi driver I used to go from my hotel to the exhibition had a Sony Handycam attached to a mount that was glued to the top of the dash and he would start recording before he drove off anywhere

Decades ago when Police started to mount cameras to the dash board ( still do til now, depending on camera type ), - hence name DashCam

That would of been my guess. Before i did any research i happened to have a compact point and shoot that recorded video and i did the same thing with something like this Amazon Dashboard Mount

If it makes you feel any better I had a guy at a car show come up to me and ask me what mine was and why i would want to have one.

I expect the buzz word DashCam will be around awhile. RoadCam is probably a better name.

Well, supposing the term "dashboard camera" slowly transformed into the abbreviated term "dashcam"... Then "windshield camera" would eventually become something like "windcam" or "shieldcam"...

judging by todays frantic world the word( dash) may have something to do with the speed some road users wish to arrive in a box planted somewhere in the corner of a cemetery

I think when Apple,Google,Microsoft launch a Camera that is marketed to all,and bought by all,that device,that name will overtake Dashboard camera as the used name.

Todays Public are Lazy, so a simply easy word thats short.My camera called for future,"i Shot"

So many modes of using a camera, so" i shot" would do for most Modes of transport from foot to flying.

Niko, Blackview is our Car DVR brand, LD100 is brand name of this Perfume Car DVR.
C5000 is its neutral name.

Even our time can find some dashboard-mounted car DVR-s. I saw about 4-5 this year.

Dashcam sounds better than a more descriptive, accurate insurancecam or justincasecam or even cyacam (cover you a** cam)
