Why so many files?

Why are there so many files on dash cams? Why are there 5 minute missing between each new file?
I have a Vantrue R2 Dash Cam.
I drove for 45 minutes and there was about 5 files and about 4 to 5 minutes missing between each file. Anything could have happened while I was driving that would not get recorded. This defeats the purpose of having a web cam. By the time it starts recording something could have happened that would not get recorded. Is this common?

Almost all dash cams use loop recording. Your camera starts a new file every 5 minutes. This guarantees that it is easy to delete the oldest file to write a new one. It also help limit the damage / data loss from file corruption. If one file is corrupted, you may still have what led up to an event / accident.
