Yacking on phone, turns in front of oncoming motorbike.

Some things you just have to walk away from, or at least pretend you did not see / hear
You do not want to be known as the guy that never say no and are nice, that will soon get the eyes of people that will abuse that fact intentional or not

Just waiting for her to go to work tomorrow morning so I can get critical property out of the house, and vanish.

Thailand sounds like a westerners nightmare. Like these people are looking for something to happen to try and get a big payday. Granted, I'm sure it sucks being "poor", but poverty is relative. I bet 30 years ago, most Thais didn't have a car and lived in very extreme poverty. Now, poverty is relative. Not western standards but not going hungry either.

Not as much lawsuit happy as in the west, but a westerner is subject to special attention from certain people.

I would use the same caution extracting myself from a failed relationship in the west.
No need to come home to find your clothes on fire in the driveway.

I can't replace my clothes easily here, I'm 6' 6".

The big problems are related to the daily level of chaos she finds normal, are not acceptable to me.

Common sense and planning are not strong points, here.

Extortion might be a better word? If they hit another Thai, the chance of a big payday according to you is slim. But hit an American, Australia, or Western European and these people see a chance at collecting lots of money.

How do these people successfully collect from Westerners? Threats? Police? Courts?

Prior to COVID I’d normally visit India every year for a few weeks and I have the same over there, regardless of whose at fault I’d get blamed if I was ever unfortunate to be involved in a car accident.

By blame? Police Extortion? Person try to extort you or how does this type of incident "go down"?

The contractor who built this house, had an accident in an adjacent province, returning home from a new project.

Getting the details on stuff like this is difficult, and it doesn't help to try to apply western concepts to your understanding of wtf happened.
All I know is, the local police seized his pickup truck until the victim was out of hospital, and mostly recovered, and payments were made to cover the medical bills, and damage to the other vehicle.

Needless to say, the contractor was put of work for almost 3 weeks, his work truck impounded.

I can only guess (hope)the contractor was at fault, and this was a lovely, and appropriate action by the cops?
No idea about official fines, or tickets.

I bumped a parked vehicle on the street last year.
No cops called.
I hoped the cam video would show the parked vehicle jumped out at me, but it didn't.

The initial request for damages was 95 dollars.
The same girlfriend talked them down to 80 dollars.
Paid.

So basically, a Dash Camera is a must, because God Forbid a Thai is hurt in an accident. It'll assumed to be your fault without proof. With both the Thai Victim and Police shaking you down for money. Sounds less than exciting.

Where I live the police generally aren't an issue. You don't see traffic cops, patrols, etc.
I potentially see a patrol car once a week when they stop to sign a log sheet at a business across the street, proving 'something'?
I've seen them do the same at other businesses.

In the nearby bigger city they hide in bushes near intersections and snag helmet and tax registration violations.

There will be a handful of uniformed cops with radios, calling out the vehicles to be waved over, and usually a folding table with a few chairs for tickets and fines.

I see highway patrol cars mostly when they escort vip caravans to the border area

In a bigger city, do you get a shake down? Also, so if the police aren't involved in smaller cities, then what would make a westerner pay more damages? Obviously, unless forced, no one will give into extortion attempts to settle for a "Lot More Money" because you are western.

Generally the public will mob you with word of mouth spreading info that I’m the bad guy.

Aaa yes mob rules, one of my favorite albums.

Gee, I'd rather be a bad guy not extorted, than beloved and conned because some 3rd world person sees a quick payday.
