MicroSD options, including MLC cards

Those are just two brands. Which specific cards were they? It seems unlikely that it would be the card itself, but I guess you never know.

The Lexar is the High Endurance MicroSDXC 64gb LSDMI64GBBNLHEA and the Transcend is the High Endurance 32gb (TS32GUSDHC10V)

And I just dont get it. I took the new replacement card out of the unit to transfer files to my computer today. It was the first time I removed it since I got it. Put it back in the cam again and it wouldnt record. I had to reformat the card again for it to start recording. Why is this happening? Maybe the Lexar card just wont play nice with my Opia2.

What computer? It's fairly well confirmed that MACs/iOS don't play nice with cards from dash cams. Usually after using the card in a MAC it needs to be reformatted in the camera.

Yeah, Ive read. Im only using a Dell laptop running windows 10

Did you have the same issues with your Transcend HE? Why stop using that card, out of curiosity? If you go back to using it, do you notice the same behaviors, or does it change?

Nope, that ran perfectly the whole month I had it. Only issues with the two lexar cards. I stopped because it was only a 32gb and I got tired of removing it quickly in order to save stuff I wanted to my computer. I decided on the 64 so I could leave it in longer. I really want a 128gb but can't find one recommended.

Hmm... How often are you pulling cards to get stuff off of them, and how quickly are you filling up 32GB?

Since I have my cam recording at 1440p, it only gets about 3 hours worth of recording. If I have something I want to save to my computer every(other day) Im pulling it quite often. This is why I wanted to get a larger card so I wouldnt have to pull it so often.

1440p seems silly to me for a dashcam. But for you, if that's what you're looking for, I might suggest going for one of the big boys like Samsung's V-NAND 256GB version. Pricey though.

I suppose I could play around with using it at 1080p. Unfortunately Vico only recommends as high as 128gb.

Why does 1440p seem silly? If it's the difference between making out a registration or not in an accident I'll take the higher resolution any day. Sure if all you want to do is take nice videos you can post up on youtube to show how good or bad yours and other's driving habits are then 1080p is probably all you need.

Consumer confusion of image quality and megapixels is a discussion for another thread.

I have absolutely never experienced anything like what you describe on Mac OSX or iOS in more than six years of using dash cams. In addition, using a Mac with a Windows VM (7 Pro) I regularly switch the cards back and forth between both OS's and then back into various cameras with no problems either.

What documentation can you provide regarding the "fairly well confirmed" allegation?

a lot comes down to what you do with the cards when they're in a Mac, if you delete any files from the card the system files that a Mac leaves behind by default which just mark the file as hidden rather than removed can trip up the camera when it starts recycling, I'm not a Mac user but there's possibly some way to flush these files when ejecting the card so may even be related to how people are handling cards as well, if you had the card in an SD adapter with the lock on when viewing the Mac can't write any of the hidden system files and will avoid this problem, if you're only viewing and not deleting any files it's generally ok

haven't come across similar any iOS related issues

Well I dunno, like I said, I've never encountered any issues like the ones being described in all these years. I've deleted files and popped the cards back into cameras, run them for literally months (rear Mobius for example), deleted the files again and put the card back into the camera again without even formatting and have been good to go again. Once in a long while I will reformat for good measure just for the hell of it, not because it seems to be necessary.

I have a couple of utilities that will reveal and identify hidden files. At some point I will explore the issue further and see what is left on the cards.

that would be helpful, it's not something which will always happen but when there are lockups and problems recycling it has been the case that there were hidden Mac OS system files left behind on the card so formatting in the camera just becomes a good housekeeping thing, don't have enough detail on that to know if it's specific to any particular versions of the Mac OS either

In Mac OS X, by default, all files that starting with a dot (“.”) before the file name are always invisible, such as .bash_profile, .svn directory, or .htaccess file. If you want to access these files, you can make these files visible. Maybe certain files end up with the “.” in front of them upon deletion? Even if that were the case they should just get written over if they are not doing anything.

Only anecdotal comments on this forum. It's been mentioned more than once so I assume there is some validity to them.

A few anecdotal comments don't strike me as "fairly well confirmed". As a "computer guy" I was thinking perhaps you had something more concrete to go on.
One thing I've learned as a long time member of DCT when it comes to things like this is that quite often reports such as this turn out in the final analysis to be user error in some form or another.

Anyway, now I'm intrigued so I'll see if I can find a way to reproduce the issue as well as see what hidden files may be lurking on the cards. On the other hand since it has never happened for me I'm still skeptical about the whole concept.
