Does having a dash cam affect your driving?

This without animosity,
I have noticed that some drivers with dash cams (on rare occasions), seem to hunt or attack a situation, just to either prove a point or assert there place on the road. Some folks have a point to prove rather than from a safety outlook.

Whatever it may be, somebody will misuse it ๐Ÿ™ And it will often not go how they wanted it to. Your cam shows everything impartially, including your own driving habits. If you're looking for trouble you will find it and your cam may not be the friend you thought it was when it proves this ๐Ÿ˜ฑ Used correctly, your cam is a very good friend. Used incorrectly it may just turn out to be your worst enemy, and that is how it should be.

Unfortunately having a dashcam doesn't have the same "educational" effect on everybody. Fortunately, as you said, they're rare. Or they're smart enough to not make their videos public.

YES !
Let sanity prevail !
I used to get upset with idiot drivers , now I just post them on youtube ..
I don't think I have been as calm behind the wheel for maybe 30 years ..
The dashcams have been the best therapy ever , and in the last few years I don't believe I have done more than utter F***n - a** - h**e ...
Most of the time now I just smile and shake my head like a adult gently scolding a naughty child .
Never mind that the standard of driving seems to have dropped some what seriously in the same time period .
I just don't understand that .. Drivers are getting worse , not better ... What the parking lot !

You would think that the method of teaching and assessing would be far more refined now than 35 years ago ..
Unfortunately it's almost like the opposite is going on ..

It's not the standards of drivers which has become atrocious- it's the standards for everything that people do which had gone into the gutter and down the drain ๐Ÿ™ The hard truth is that we, the older generations, are the ones who watched this happening and allowed it to continue without stopping it like we should have. Now we're outnumbered and cannot change things, and the lunatics have taken over the asylum ๐Ÿ˜• You can choose to be popular as those lunatics do, or you can choose to be correct knowing that they will not understand your reasons for choosing that. Let the foolish go on unimpeded, with any luck they will kill themselves sooner that way rendering the world a slightly better place when they do ๐Ÿ˜Ž

Let my cams show everything including me- I have nothing to fear from that ๐Ÿ˜‰

that poses the qusstion what you did before.

I've done some things I wouldn't have done without dashcam.

Mostly to expose the folly of the roads and it signs. But also sometimes of other drivers

The problem is the roads have become a free for all. The authorities have all but stopped prosecuting unless (A) is an easy - mode prosecution that takes in more cash than it costs or (B) after a catastrophic event, which is too late.

I'm not sure what us older drivers could have done to stop this. The underlying problem is the obsession with personal freedom being more important than a system of cooperation (rules!) If you dare to speak out against personal freedom these days you are labelled a bigot.

Oh and our (UK) police are so hamstrung its amazing they get anything done. They are supposed to "police with consent."

Yes, but you're not supposed to be getting consent from the bad guys, you dummies!

(Tapatalk is doing funny things, hopefully this line will stop it.)

I got angry and frustrated .. ( pointless )
I never took the anger out on anyone , I had that much self control .
But I got close a few times when people got really stupid and pushed ...

I am driving more carefully after mounting the dashcam and I always feel that a witness or a guardian is with me. Now it is my normal driving because I mounted it 5 years ago.
But I saw some videos where the car with dashcam not avoiding a small accident just because he has something to record. Usually I saw this in russian videos but also in few australians.

I pretty often review cam files to see 'WTF' happened. ๐Ÿ™‚
I have a couple from the last week I can't upload yet because my internet speed sucks.
One shows a car trying to occupy the same lane I'm moving into with a turn signal. I can't see enough easily to see if the car was moving into the lane before I was, and I sure as heck don't see a turn signal being used by them. It looks like they were two lanes over, and jerked into the lane I was moving into.(With a turn signal) No contact, but looked like the evil trucker was trying to run over people. ๐Ÿ™‚
Another happened a few nights ago, and an aggressive, speeding, truck apparently misjudged the speed of the truck ahead of him, and the space available as he tried to squeeze into a gap. He ended up jumping in front of me and standing on his brakes to avoid hitting the truck ahead of him. Meaning, I had to brake heavily to keep from running into the jerk. ๐Ÿ™
I'm often accuse on youtube of trying to set up incidents, or not doing enough to avoid them.
I drive very safely, to an extent most people can't appreciate, but I'm not going to go out of the way to avoid some idiot. I won't turn over the truck, or run off the road, or run into another vehicle to compensate for some dangerous or stupid activity by somebody else.
The dash cams allow me that 'luxury'.

To be honest, you don't need to try to find stuff to post. Just do the speed limit, stop at stop signs and red lights, use turn signals, don't tailgate, and you will be surrounded by angry people who think YOU are the bad driver. ๐Ÿ™‚

I too sometimes wonder how a situation arose. My default assumption is I wasn't being observant enough. But the dash cam often shows there was no advance warning. It's a healthy reminder that you are never fully in control.

A few days ago I was a bit slow getting out of the way of an unmarked police car on the motorway. I had heard it but didn't see the blue lights.

My new but crappy rear cam showed that there WERE no blue lights, just alternating headlights (hard to see from my van) and I wasn't really slow to react, he'd cut across fast from a slip road. I'm still not sure if it was a real emergency vehicle. No blue light means no impersonating police?

I had one of those 'WTF happened moments' a few days back. In reviewing the clip it was a combination of poor judgement/driving on the other guy and a bit of 'maybe I should have been more observant' on my part.

Traffic was coming from my right so that's where most of my attention was focused (away from him) but traffic was coming from his left so he would have been looking in my direction and should have been more aware of me than I was of him.

Totally agree

Totally agree

There is a huge stigma attached to the speed limit .. Everyone wants to drive at the limit of not getting a ticket ( and beyond ) .
I have cruise control now , so I just set my car to 79 in a 80 zone ( GPS sais 79.5 kmh )
And a good 50% of the cars pass me .. Because 80 in a 80 zone is not good enough , they need to do 82 or 83 or 84 or 85 .. What ever they think they can get away with !
Because the fines work like 5 to 15 over the limit , 15 to 25 , 25 to 30 ..Well a close enough .. And the speed at which you lose your license has been dropped from 30 over the limit to 26 over the limit ( Victoria - Australia )
Just a FYI for those thinking their license is safe to 30 over the limit . ( Old rules )
It is now suspended @ 26 over the limit

Numbers for that are higher up here, i would say driving 80 km/h on a highway 90 % of cars coming up from behind will pass me.
It is actually at a level that if a car do not pass me, then i am applauding that out loud in my car, mostly after a while of the car not overtaking, and then saying "well i am a fooking mazed"
To reach your numbers i estimate i would have to be going 90 km/h where 80 is the limit.

Here 6% of the speed is factored off to account for any loss/gains in mesuring equipment.

Would anyone care to guess how many drivers obey the 20mph speed limits being added to MAIN roads in London? (Some entire boroughs are covered by 20mph limits on roads where the councils are allowed to impose it.)

Some of these roads are four lanes wide with central barriers so pedestrians will never be crossing. There are no parked cars allowed, no hazards whatsoever. And yes, there are speed cameras.

I drive at or slightly over the speed limit here and 99%+ of the traffic passes me ๐Ÿ˜ฑ The nearest main road to my home has a limit of 35MPH; the average speed driven is 45, and 1 in 20 cars goes 50MPH. Watch 5 minutes and somebody will go by going faster than 50 ๐Ÿ™ Speed limits here are obeyed only in small towns that have their own police, since everybody knows their main source of revenue comes from speeding tickets. Once the city limits are behind you, it's press hard on the long skinny pedal until the next small town comes up ๐Ÿ˜›

Many of the roads here can be driven safely well above the speed limit if you're paying attention. That's half the problem- people will not respect or obey limits set lower than they need to be, and when there's enough of that happening they just disregard all the speed limits ๐Ÿ™„ Plus the Cops here aren't very imaginative; when they set up a speed trap it's always in the same places so if you don't see them there you're OK to fly. And the Cops here drive as poorly as everyone else does ๐Ÿ˜ก I just wish I could afford to get my sorry butt out of this state and never come back- it's gone from being a great place to live down to being a lunatic's asylum without walls.
