HD Portable DVR Dashcam Issue

I have a HD Portable DVR Dashcam that refuses to record whilst being charged.

When I plug it into the USB port in my car, or computer, all I get is a fixed static screen, and am not able to access any of the menus, etc., and it won't record.

Any clues, please.

This is no-name generic version, unfortunately.

Does it work when plugged into a powerbank? If so then it is probably being put into card reader mode, which could be avoided by either using a charging only cable (no data lines connected) or using a 12V cigar lighter / accessory socket USB adaptor for the power.
