Help me design the perfect system please

Copius amounts of data are more practical to transfer via USB than WiFi using current technology

Yeah I'd take cables over wifi 95% of the time Jokiin ..... give me RJ45 over AC1900 anyday. And indeed if it's a no go on the wifi then fair enough but the nature of the application I thought to be a nice potential wifi function. It seems that in the small device world NFC seems be getting a foothold and in my limited experience works quite nicely although not sure of the fit in the dashcam world.

True but that's not compressed. Even putting it into .7z can save you 65% of space in some cases - let alone some of the custom paid for algorithms out there that can do a lot So that 100mb is suddenly 35mb. Again this is just scratching the surface of this problem.

I think if you start asking the camera to compress files and send you're getting into dangerous territory, Ambarella still don't even get some of the basics sorted, having support for something like this in the SDK would be nice but I can't see it happening anytime soon given their current run rate, eg the dual card support the 0806 still doesn't have I requested over 2 years ago, still hasn't eventuated, anyway I'm sure I don't need to remind you what they can be like to deal with

Yes I'm sure the 'ideal world' requirement I outline has a great deal more complexity than I could even begin to understand fully. But I certainly think the function in the purest sense many folk would find very useful.

The example I have from my own experience is based on using a couple of tablet computers (a new Sony Z4 Tablet & an older Nexus 7) and a two year old Panasonic TZ60 camera. They are all equipped with wifi of course but also the NFC Near Field Communication facility. Again I have zero real idea how it works technically but you simply bring the NFC touch points on each device into close proximity....e.g position the TZ60 near to the Nexus 7 and they form the relationship and the pictures and video move from the camera to the Nexus. That type of functionality for me would be perfect. Speed not critical, real time not critical, but data relocation for review/edit and maybe publish definitely.

To visualize this in our real world, I saw it such that on each day of the XC90 Euro trip, we would buckle up, form the relationship between the cam and the device....whether it be NFC, WIFI or whatever....and then drive. The data would move from the cam to the (non networked) device over time during the journey. Should the journey complete and the data movement not be complete then the data movement would simply continue until completion. I use the word' simply' in the loosest sense of course 😉 In our slightly cosy example, I saw me 'end of day' sitting in a club lounge of the Intercontinental processing the video footage down and posting it to a web site (our own) or to a YouTube account is speed up format for family and suchlike to see. By the way you're talking to a man who neither has a Youtube or even Facebook account so is a bit wistful stuff at present.

To have available the functionality Dan mentioned in his earlier post....'to find home network, upload and store' would be stella and indeed I could deploy our network to do that, although I suspect that would be a smaller market of folks who might take advantage of that at this moment. I can imagine a significantly larger number of folks would however like the ability to dump video data to whatever colour of portable device and it have a much wider appeal. As I say at this time until folks start to think wider and start getting more impacted by the what do they call it....'the internet of things'

It's the type of tech that may well come, current hardware isn't quite there yet, that said though you don't plan everything on what's possible right now as by the time the product comes its obsolete already

is a good point Jokiin, yes I have time on the test-bed to play, break, fix and upgrade....we are looking a year out, maybe more for the fancy install. And I have to say it's quite fun stuff learning and playing with this stuff. So yes in 12-18 months time things will likely have evolved further.
