Home CCTV - NAS or NVR?

Those cams will have really poor night time video, a still in the night time might be ok but any movement and it will probably look a mess.

Have a look at the site ipcamtalk, that’s where I went, there are plenty of suggestions and reviews.

Will check. Thank you

Went with the UNV 4 camera setup with the hybrid DVR. In all honestly, it does leave a lot to be desired but is still more than adequate for the intended purpose.

Post some day and night images.

An update to this, in the black Friday sales I bought a Reolink RLK8-800d4 https://reolink.com/product/rlk8-800d4/

They seem to have good reviews on youtube. They have just released a new model with AI human/person detection, which is £80-90 more. I decided I would stick with the RLK8-800d4, I can swap out the the cameras for the upgraded ones down the line if I want.

I'm quite impressed by the software so far, next thing I have to do is run the cabling which I am dreading a bit, I think if I can get some floorboards up I should have enough access to to feed rods through to where I need them (assuming there are no walls in the way!)

I may post a small review once it's al up and running.

If it is also POE then you at least only need to wire the network cable, my new camera are POE so while not a big deal as it is mounted on my balcony door, then it is still nice.

I am using a network based Dahua branded system, nothing big only support 4 cameras, which should also be enough for most people i would think.
My friend run a Hikvision system, it have also performed just fine aside for a cable " dying " now and then due to exposure and mice / rats on his " farm "

You of course can set up remote viewing and get notifications on a smartphone ASO, or log in via a PC, i like the PC route as i always sit in front of it anyway, and it is plenty powerful to run that in one window while i do anything else.
I have a tablet on my bedside table that also get notifications when something human or vehicle shaped are near my car ( filmed from above so nothing in the background to give false alerts )

There are also a ton of small home CCTV systems these days, but i dont really keep up with these today.

Sorry to hear about your father in law!

I use a Reolink system as well and have been mostly pleased with it.

Initially I tried to use my Synology NAS, but you have to pay for licenses for each cam and it quickly bogs down the system. I sold my licenses and switched to a Reolink NVR and have been much happier.

They have a ton of different camera options now, though I’m sure other brands also have a good variety of choices too.

I've still got my Reolink system as well, I upgraded to the "AI" cameras last year, I have it set up so I get person/vehicle notifications when I am away from the house. The system has been very reliable (unlike the swann system which occasionally seems to have hiccups, and the software is very poor)

Some of the big brands like Hikivision are probably even better systems, but I think the reolink systems are kinda in the middle with regards to quality/price.

I went for a single 5MP wifi Reolink camera, saving files internally to a microSD card. No data cable to the camera, just PoE from a mains socket via an adapter.

The plus was not having to run any data cabling from my router outside to the camera, and I could still access the camera using the Reolink app.

The downside is my ISP sent us a new router to try and fix a connection issue. That changed the SSID & password. So the Reolink camera no longer connects to the router. Hopefully it's still recording internally. One day I'll have to take it down from the wall and bring it inside to plug it in to the router, unless there's another way to update the network access. Maybe a bit of reading the manual is needed.

Seems to me you should be able to change the SSID/password of the router to what was on the previous one (or anything else for that matter) - I've never seen a router where that was not possible.

Yes, I realised that after I'd switched every other device in the house over to the new SSID.

Reolink support page suggests I should be able to connect to the camera direct via wifi/app and point it to the new network.

Yes, you can do that. I went through that exercise quite some time back when I installed a range extender with it's own SSID. Unfortunately I've now forgotten what the process entailed.
