I know some people keep spare cards with them in the car, how do you store them safely without loosing them.

Easy answer:
DSTT+for+NDSL+with+32GB+SDHC+Support+USB+Card+Reader+(c).jpg

fits perfectly in my coins holder:

In the little plastic case that they come in, stored in glove box or console.

I have lost most of those little cases so only store one spare in its adaptor plugged into the SD card slot on the stereo.

I use SD cards in many things, not just dash cams.

I have many many Pelican cases for my film production gear and it makes sense to me to store my delicate sd cards in a rugged case:

Never bother If something should happen I will pull it out of the camera. At 9 hrs on a card I can record 1000km of travel without changing cards.

Just in the plastic case that it comes with and in the centre console.

I have a spare card I keep in the car so that I have the option of putting a fresh card in the camera and keeping footage safe. Just in the glove box.

I keep two extra 32GB cards in the case with the full SD adapter. They
sit in my ash tray as I don't smoke and nobody else is allowed to either.
