Any reason not to killl two birds with one stone? I’m thinking about getting a good battery jumper box that recharges from the 12v socket and use it to power a dash cam. It could live in the rear floor where nobody ever sits or (even better) in the trunk. Those things have tons of capacity and can be had for <$100, and they can also actually be used to start the car should the battery die.

I can’t be the first person who’s done this, right? What are the downsides?

If i was to need parking guard for longer durations, my approach would be to put a #2 battery in the car ( probably AGM )
Of course with a charge / discharge splitter so that battery only run dashcams'

Only downside i can think of to that would be many cars do not have room for a second battery, at least in the engine compartment, in relation to car stereo i have run extra batteries in the back once back in the 90ties.
