BMW now offers an own Dashcam called: BMW Advanced Car Eye

Price seems afforable with €250 for the front and rear cam kit.

It would be good to know how it operates with BMWs IBS (Intelligent Battery System)

There seems to be a modus for shock detection while parking and motion detection, and a "performance mode" for maximum lenght of recording.

Also the product information tells that the image performance is outstanding for day and night recording...

I could find these information:

Produktbeschreibung
einsetzbar.
Verkaufsargumente/Vorteile
– Hat brenzlige Situationen im Blick: Die hochempfindliche
Full HD Kamera zeichnet automatisch kritische Fahrsituationen,

ganz einfach. Das große Display sorgt für eine optimale
Lesbarkeit.
– Ansprechendes Design: Der leichte, klare, sehr hochwertige
sehr nutzerfreundlich.
– Stand-by: Das Display dunkelt sich automatisch ab, dadurch
Kamerasystemen.
Funktionalität
– Bewegungserkennung: Die BMW Advanced Car Eye Kamera

Nothing special from design. Functionality and specs are over 1y old. Just OEM of some mid-class Korean brand with BMW logo. Reminds me Mandoo design, but seeing front CMOS 2.4Mpix I can guess its Sony Exmor IMX122LQJ, however its early to say, just my speculations. Aperture is good F1.7 and FOV is also just about right.
The biggest concern is Cortex A8 CPU. This can process 2channel same time with ratio of : front camera 1080p / 30fps but rear is VGA or D1 at it best, - this is disapointing for such a prestige brand name like BMW, which is one of my favourite car makers ( had 3 bmw in the past ), rest of my cars are also ONLY germans ( Audi, MB, VW ;)

This reminds me last year announcement of Renault starting offerinf 1ch their branded dashcans in Europe but they are only D1 or 720p if I remember correctly.

Dont know who in bmw team deciding about so called "innovations", because till now they are always were offering other really advanced extras, except their this dashcam project which on dashcam worldwide arena is over 1y old and nothing special. Its even puts down bmw reputation.

P.S. to bmw developers if they read this post: myself being bmw fan, I am ready to work for free with your BMW R&D dashcam team in order to create a high-end unique dashcam solution for bmw vehicles and this way to rise a bmw reputation. Othetwise with this present dashcam solution you will disapoint many bmw fans ;)

@ niko nice one not sure if it will be picked up by BMW on this site though.......It would not hurt to Email them direct with your concerns and suggestions, dont mention that you will do it for free though....... they are not exactly strapped for cash and your knowledge and expertise are worth rewarding......Ipol :) they will be better served by paying someone for getting it right.....rather than having already paid someone for getting it wrong.

I know they can do things right way, I mean things they understand and have experience in ( like automotive ), but it looks like dashcam is their weakest area. I am sure in collaboration with DCT forum members they could create more desired dashcam solution that reflects bmw ideology and style. About "rewards" from bmw we can talk later after project is successfully finished, latest M5 will be enough for me :), ok, M3 would also do the job :) ( ha-ha, its nice to dream ).

I do respect design style and solutions of almost all bmw models ( except design failure of E60 series ) and I am sure with outside help they can develop trully advanced dashcam system, especially if they have money to invest in it.

If you have some Bavarians connections, you may pass my message to them, but I am sure they know how to google and sooner or later they will read this thread ;)
After that its up to them: to admit their mistakes and start thinking in dashcam solution development, or stick to non-bmw style way of thinking by using 1y. old solution they introduced now.

Unfortunately all attempts at contacting BMW takes you to a what type of car do you wish to buy page so lets hope someone at BMW reads DCT..............I see their share prices dropped today.....must be down to the choice of dashcams they are installing :D Ipol

I'll try to get one very cheap and check whats inside :D

I have no doubt that @niko could guide the BWM R&D department in creating a high-end unique dash cam solution for BMW vehicles far better than the one they've chosen to go with but @jokiin, considering the nature of the products you have under development and nearing the marketplace, have you considered approaching major motor vehicle manufacturers about providing an already developed high end product solution? If BWM and other luxury manufacturers are at the point of exploring dash cams, now would be the time to present them with a quality solution perhaps not found elsewhere? GuardTrak could even become the go-to OEM supplier in the automotive space. I can imagine for example a customized firmware that would even boot with the car's logo and other vehicle specific info and the nature of the GuardTrak mount could be viewed as more integrated into a vehicle than some of the aftermarket "swivel mounted" products.

hehe my cheap ass Chinese duble DIN headunit boot with a Mercedes logo, Suzuki is not possible in settings :p

Gott im himmel. I can not believe Bayerische Motoren Werke would sink this low

if cameras were OEM and vehicle specific they could be designed much better than the way we do it now where we need to make them as universal as possible/practical, we are too small a company for any car manufacturer to ever want to listen to us, let alone work with us, nice thought and appreciate the compliment but I can't see it ever happening

Oh, I see. That's too bad. Of course, someone from my limited perspective sees it differently.......I figured if you could sell somewhat custom units to one or more major auto firms eventually you might be posting to DCT from the deck of your yacht in Monaco. :)

Edit: Wait!...on second thought, if BMW would go with the not terribly "vehicle specific" product they've currently chosen, how could the GuardTrak not be worthy of consideration? Just sayin'.....

valid point but no doubt someone in some marketing department has decided this is a good idea and has approached the camera manufacturer, can't see it being the camera manufacturer that has approached the car company, you never get a look in when trying to talk to these people

Sounds like you may have some experience trying to "get a look in".

So yes, those whacky marketing types. Must have been the same ones who decided it was a good idea to offer "BMW" athletic sneakers on their website along with a lot of other surprising "BMW Lifestyle Accessories".

Sounds like you may have some experience trying to "get a look in".

have had some experience with this, they spend a lot of time building roadblocks to stop you rather than being open to discussion, just the way it works I think, I'm sure not all car companies are the same, in some countries it's a lot easier than others (kickbacks), as in a lot of things in life it often comes down to 'it's not what you know, but who you know' as to whether you can crack this market, in all honesty at the moment we have too much to do to be chasing people that are reluctant to talk to us

So true. Although sometimes things are different based on the prevailing attitude in different locations. Years ago living and working in NYC it was very difficult (but not impossible) to get my foot in the door in the world of advertising and publishing but when I went out to San Francisco the same fields and markets were extremely welcoming and receptive to new material walking in the door.

I know what you mean, I keep away from these 'boys clubs' where you need to know someone or owe someone to get anywhere

Well if that is the attitude of BMW it is a tunnel vision syndrome approach and their loss.......But hey they are not the only car manufacturers in the world, if they have started offering dashcams in their cars others will follow and may have a modern approachable attitude........Ipol
