Nextbase IQ

May as well put a sticker on your windshield saying "Smash window, Take my highly visible dash cam"
At least the AI will capture the thief with his hoody and dark glasses and balaclava on.

will it though? Lets see if it works reliably or at all lol

I did a search yesterday looking for reviews. All that was returned was a dozen magazine reviews, all dated the 3rd Nov and a lot of the wording was the same

Not surprising. This has been the YouTube climate for years. Speak up and honestly and you'll lose review units and hence income for your channel and your livelihood

Since most of the features don't work without a subscription, the new owner of the dashcam is going to have to register their details, along with the ip address / ID of the dashcam itself, thus when Nextbase sees a dashcam being registered by a new owner, they should be asking the real owner for permission to reassign it, and passing the new owners details to the police if appropriate... maybe it will be a target for magpies rather than profesional thieves?

I've had the IQ for over a week. I've mostly had the unit just in the office for testing purposes so I don't have any real driving footage. I could drive it around if people want some footage but I figured Vortex Radar would be on top of that haha

One downside for its price is that it doesn't have any tamperproof case for the SD card (example: Drone XC & Blackvue) for users that don't want to pay $10/$20 per month on subscriptions. Also, given its hardware design it's hard to see any tamperproof case coming in the future for the IQ.

I just finished my interview with a Nextbase product architect for the iQ and that was awesome. We covered a ton of technical details and I'm excited to share the discussion with you all. I'll probably have it up next week sometime.

@psuh89, given that you have the unit already, it'd be awesome if you could share some video samples. This stuff always works better when we all share our experiences and findings. :)

I wonder how much of that is just out of convenience. Most people don't have a super detailed background on everything they cover. They'll get a thing, read over the marketing bullet points, and then share some of the basics.

I think it's a common fear that if you share bad reviews, people will stop sending you stuff. I'm not sure that's true in my experience. If you're just being mean for no reason, sure people aren't gonna wanna work with you. If you're being up front and fair, I've seen companies get excited about sending new models afterwards because they're looking forward to seeing how you like the improvements they've implemented based on earlier feedback.

Getting free review units is certainly nice, but we're talking about dashcams that cost a couple hundred dollars here and can easily be ordered online. It's not like a car where it's unrealistic for most everyone to just go out and buy every car they want to review. If you really wanna test a dashcam and a company won't send you one for whatever reason, you can go buy one for yourself or you can hop on a forum like this and ask if anyone has one they'll be willing to lend to you.

I think it is more often that positive reviews sell better, that is what the readers want to read and viewers want to watch, not true on specialist websites such as this, but it is on most publications written, spoken and video. The easy way to write a positive review is to follow the marketing documents, and many authors don't care how accurate their script is because most of their readers/viewers don't care either most of the time.

Somebody should start a channel full of negative reviews, showing all the bad things about the products and how they could have been designed better, not sure it would get a lot of viewers though.

I actually thought about, why not make a place where you only say stuff that's not positive, like not hating ASO on people, but like the countless places stores ask you to review their service / products ASO, but then only for if there is anything bad to say, CUZ why would you praise normal, like you got what you paid for, that should be normal and not need praise.

It would probably be hard to manage, CUZ hating come so natural these days.

Okay there is facebook, i have been contemplating a assbook, i mean come on, granted i have never been there, but a assbook cant be much worse than facebook already is, and if one could make a few billions in the process, hey i am game.

Having done YouTube reviews myself years and years ago, and in regular contact with some of the bigger YouTubers myself (who started in the days when we were in contact together with Nokia PR, circa-2014/2015 etc), this is very much the case. They won't go publicly on record with it so as to not damage their reputation, but in working with brands this has been a consistent experience with them. They may have the odd brand that takes on positive feedback as you say, but a lot of brands also do not as they wish for positive feedback to sell their product, as @Nigel said. To be honest, I probably would have gone all-in as a YouTuber in those years but I had just started a family, so my workings with Nokia and just my tech obsession took a back seat for a few years, by the time I got time to myself again, YouTube had already started blowing up haha.

You make the point about dash cameras that cost a couple of hundred dollars - for lots of channels starting out, whether it's a $1000 device or a $200 device the consensus is going to be the same. They may wish to keep the review units for their own tech needs (future comparison videos) or tech obsessions, or they may wish to sell them on so as to buy review units if a company is not going to send it to them. There are very few YouTube channels that have objective reviews out there (and if so, a lot of them are big channels who are in the position to pick and choose who they work with), and the market has only become increasingly cut-throat in the years since, so every little channel has to work hard to get subscribers and grow their channel. It's easier for them to read the marketing points, and say perhaps one negative thing about the product, but their byline is to buy that device. And every other device as well lol. They're not going to flat-out not recommend buying a device, as to harm their chances with getting future review units.

The thing is, in the early days of YouTube, brands were excited to work with influencers and the like, to garner feedback both negative and positive for their product. The same applied to written blogs now (which I've seen in the last few years have followed the same structure as what is happening with YouTube), and the same when I worked with Nokia back in the day. Nowadays, there's a zillion phone companies coming out of China, and other tech devices too, and they just want the positive PR spun around their products. They live and die by what someone says online, with the thinning profit margins.

Most Chinese dash cam sellers only need to focus on Amazon selling, you can check how the best seller is doing.

What they need is a 5-star, not a bug list report or improvements list.

So now you understand some sellers join the DCT, and then disappear for no reason.

Stars put things in perspective, when i look up at them i feel a lot of things but most prominent amazed and small, but all other stars from ratings to movie i care very little for.
You can also run your company in a few different ways, you can give your customers what you know / think they want, or you can engage with your customers and know for sure what they want.

I would still pay top dollar for a dashcam, but if i do that i must also insist it is truly in a class of its own, i do not want to pay for a brand or features i will probably not use,and get image quality i could get in a dashcam half the price.
At 699 USD it would for sure have to be a dashcam that is truly second to none, and i am pretty sure in this price range i would not like all those money attached to the vindscreen, so a system with a remote main unit that could be secured in some way would be something i would like.

Popped into our local Halfords today and there is no sign of the new iQ, display gone, just a case full of Series 2s.

Did Nextbase do it again ?
Meaning release a disastrous new series.

I can't find it in the Nextbase Amazon Store either:

Seems odd given that I have been seeing TV adverts for it, or maybe just Youtube adverts, something must have gone wrong.

Making radar units out of depleted Uranium might have been a bad idea.

There are some interesting reviews, if you sort by "Lowest Rating", instead of reading the 5 star reviews that look like there was some incentive to make the iQ appear spectacular!

For example, without a subscription, files recorded locally on the SD card are inaccessible directly in the app. If ever you need to show authorities footage at the scene of an incident, you'll either need to 1] eject the SD card from the iQ and use a nearby laptop and a SD card reader to access the files, or 2] pay for a subscription. Most people do not carry around a laptop nor a SD card reader, so it seems unethical that iQ owners will be forced to purchase a subscription during a particularly stressful moment as their only means of accessing evidence.

Indeed, having read All 45 reviews, 15 or so where written by (Varified Customers) , of those 15, some don’t say.
30 where written by (Tech insider network members). (i) (Reviewers in this invitation only program are provided products for the purpose of writing honest, unbiased reviews. Other than receiving products to test and review receive no other compensation)
What I found lacking was detail. No comparison footage, no mention of sensors/lenses etc. Infact very disappointing. It certainly wouldn’t encourage me to dash (excuse the pun) out and buy one.
28 of the 45 wouldn’t even recommend one to a friend.

Didn't you know that "what makes the perfect image is not the lens, sensor or processor":

What I found lacking was detail. No comparison footage,
A search of Youtube doesn't turn up much footage of any kind.
