Too many ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
I understand about assembly vs. manufacturers that do their own engineering and assembly. No doubt that's one of the problems with no-name or almost-unknown manufacturers. One can expect that with such non-brands but of course shouldn't have to. Still, caveat emptor I suppose.
even some of the better known names have no engineering capability

It would very interesting to see if ANY of the Chinese brands, even the well-known ones, are ISO 9001 certified. Dare I guess the answer is no?

For me personally SJCam comes to mind. I honestly don't know for sure but the impression I got time and again is either that they don't do their own engineering or they have a serious internal communication problem. The firmware folks don't seem to understand what the hardware engineers are doing and vice-versa. The manufacturing personnel don't seem to communicate with either one and the packaging folks can't even put together a box with all the right parts in it. And don't get me started on the utter failure of their customer service personnel to understand their own products. Then there was the recent incident of the plagiarized SJ4000 manual because apparently somebody didn't explain properly to the consultant what he was supposed to be writing. UGH!

I'm now writing reviews of the Dazzne P2 Plus and the Elephone Explorer Pro. I've only just received them so I don't have anything to report but at least now I'll personally have a basis for comparison to my one and only action cam experience with SJCam. Already with the Elephone there's the implication in it's claim to be a 4K camera that it's 4K native resolution which it's not, but to their credit this is clearly disclosed on the camera web page.

As I wrote, I don't trust products which contain poor english and for Ele, an internet domain .cc from Cocos Island which is 14KM² and just 600 people. They cannot afford a .com?

their credit this is clearly disclosed
I was searching a lot on that page to clearly see where they described their 4K is not real. After few minutes I discovered somewhere hidded at the end of the page.
So I made a screenshot to help people not losing their time like me:

This is great stuff. All over the world we need to name and shame every profiteering manufacturer of every product that tries to rip us off by LYING to us. Lose them business, report them to the authorities and maybe even put them out of business. That's the only way we can fight back against people who are making profit at the expense of us throwing our money away.

Thanks Mtz. I knew about the disclosure within the specs despite all the preceding claims of 4K. From previous discussions here I knew the NT96660 could not do 4K. I suspected about the Voice Broadcast because I didn't see it mentioned in the user manual that came with the camera. (As I said, just now getting into it). But why do you suspect IMX078 instead of IMX117?

Now, I'm not defending Elephone by any means, but to clarify I don't think they said their 4K was the same as the
Consumer Technology Association-branded 4K Ultra HD (3840 x 2160). This is, in my opinion, the way Chinese camera companies can say that their "4K" cameras aren't 4K - I know, I know, it's bull****. I'm trying to think of an analogy - let's say a Volvo S60 sedan sold in the US. It doesn't mean it has a 6-cylinder engine, or a 6-liter engine, or seats 6 people, or that "S" means supercharged. It's just a model number. Let me repeat I AGREE WITH YOU. I'm just saying it's unfortunate that they can be deceptive yet not technically wrong.

1. That ELE page was created in 2015 on december 30. At that time the IMX117 Sony CMOS was not supported by Novatek NT96660 .
2. Why to use an expensive CMOS which can do real 4K at 60FPS if the camera can output max the fake 4K at just 24FPS?

Okay, thanks, that makes sense. You have a lot more knowledge of these things than I do. I appreciate the input!

Cheers :)

Mtz we appreciate your efforts to create a "list of shame" but you need also to incorporate to the list cams which "tell the truth" and which also sit at the top of the technology pyramid.

Thank you!

I am waiting for affordable and real 4K cameras to be released this year and manufacturers will work this year and in 2016 we will have 4K cameras, I hope under $200.
But I am afraid that for a great 4K image is needed also a bigger sensor than the ones used in actual 2K cameras and I don't expect at least first models to use big CMOS. In my opinion the winner will be the one which will use big CMOS from a quality brand.

When I will have info about such cameras I will add to the list or even better, to create a thread with real 4K cameras.

enjoy,
Mtz

Mtz, in your posting on this thread on January 9, 2016, Item 8, you listed Sunplus 6350 image processor as capable of 4K at just 10fps. I'm writing a review of the Eken H8R which they claim is capable of 3840 x 2160 at 30fps and no caveats about interpolation. This would be false based on their use of the Sunplus 6350? I couldn't find anything on the Sunplus website. The sensor is a Sony IMX 078. If I understand the Sony data sheet, the IMX078 does have 4K 30pfs capability. By the way the Sunplus and Sony claims come only from the seller, not from the manufacturer, but if true, based on the Sunplus claim at least, that makes the 4K 30fps false?

Any help you can offer would be appreciated. Cheers :)

Not sure about the sensor and 4K quality, you can also follow the RCGroups link for reference.
If checked the photo quality, seems not the IMX078, I thought IMX078 can do better.
