You used to be able to do this in settings before they forced the new Google + Profile stuff.

Here's how you can make all youtube videos automatically play at the highest available HD setting.

► Google Chrome :
Auto HD For YouTube™

EDIT: I like Magic Actions for YouTube™ better

or

►Firefox:
Youtube High Definition

►Safari:
Sorry Not Available In This Browser

►Internet Explorer:

I use Internet Explorer and it almost always tries to make every video play in the lowest quality setting possible (144p).

What about YouTube Control Center?

It's probably okay but based on the research I did and YouTube videos I watched the one I recommended seems to be the most effective and least obtrusive easy install for getting it to work right the first time

One of the things I do with Firefox is get the YouTube Down-loader Add-On. Then when I see a YouTube Video I like, I download it in the resolution I want to see it in.

Depending on what the video is and what I'm doing, I may keep some of the files I've downloaded.

For Chrome users, you can enable HD by default from installing "YouTube options" along with YouTube centering for videos instead of having to watch from the far left of the screen which is the default setting.

I use the Youtube Options browser extension. Highly recommended!

https://spoi.com/software/

Works with
  • Google Chrome (Current versions of Production, Beta, Development, and Canary) for OSX, Windows, and Linux
  • Opera (Current versions of Production, Next, and Development) for OSX, Windows
  • Apple Safari (5.1, 6, 7) for OSX, Windows

I really recommend youtube center.

It let's you disable autoplay, set what size window and resolution you want videos to load at by default, disable dash playback, set either flash/html5 player, and lots of other useful goodies.

Nice, looks like this one works for internet explorer users as well. I'll update the original post.

It appears that they've gone to a subscription model. That would be unfortunate if other options didn't exist. I added in Magic Actions & it seems happy.
