Viofo Recommended SSD

Luckily, I have other uses for that SSD if I end up not using it for my A329TC, but Chuck's point still stands. IMHO, Viofo's handling to date of SSD compatibility for both the original A329 and the various A329S siblings has not been ideal at all. I will say that when my T7 Shield worked (until more recently), it functioned well and reliably--and I still am extremely happy overall with the A329TC itself.. I like being able to mount the SSD under my dash out of sight and with less direct sun/heat exposure. But maybe the fact that other cam manufacturers have not (yet?) implemented external SSD recording support is an indicator of it not being as cut & dried as Viofo has made it seem.

Viofo has pretty decent products for the most part but their handling has been abysmal. I would say I would be surprised if they incorporate SSD support on their next models but wouldn't be surprised at this stage.

You're right, other manufacturers, not a single one has implemented SSD support despite using the same novatek chipsets. I wonder why...

FYI I paid ~US$250 for that SSD in June 2025 on AMZ and it is now there for $698. Thanks, AI! 🙄

Just for a collective gasp of shock: I looked today and that Samsung T7 Shield 4TB is now going for US$1003 on Amazon. 😱

Hello everyone. I might be posting in the wrong place, but this message might help someone make a choice SSD for a329s.

I reread the threads for this recorder and saw that often even the recommended models don't work well. I also studied the relevant threads on the 4pda forum. I purchased an external SSD case, SSD from HP and cable from Viofo.
Box - https://aliexpress.ru/item/1005007275323504.html
In the box, as I understand it, it is very important which controller is used, here it is installed RTL9210B.
Ssd - HP FX900 Plus Series

I installed the SSD in the case and connected it to Windows 10. Then I partitioned the drive (GPT) so that 10% was left free.I disconnected the drive and connected it to the recorder. I was prompted to format the drive and assign video recording to it. Everything works fine now.

I hope this information will be useful to someone.

It might fail in the future though. Viofo had stated official support for SSDs with enclosures, but this was withdrawn because there were a lot of reported issues.

The whole thing has been a mess. No other brand has stated SSD support, and you know why now.

Just a FYI for those that may be interested.

After reading the good spot by @Chuck McCoy that the Samsung T7 Shield 4TB had recently been removed from the list of recommended PSSD models on the A329S webpage, I was curious as to why and why now when it had previously been touted as one of the best options....I was probably going to go for the T7 to pair with a A329S package on its way to me and although I have a preference for LaCie Rugged or SSD's from OWC due to years of experience in other uses, I've understood the T7 to be a well regarded drive...

So I opened a ticket with Support to try and gain some clarity on what the situation now is.

Received a couple of replies from Nancy yesterday – and yes, seems they no longer recommend the T7 due to some user reported issues (anybody ?) and the model variations that are available with the T7.
I also raised the issue that despite them promoting the support of 4TB SSD storage on the A329S, they actually now had no models listed for recommendation. Also, the fact that the Sandisk Extreme, the 1TB and 2TB being two of the only three SSD they now list, is also available in a 4TB capacity – I asked if this should be considered as a 4TB option:

Answers below: (note: obviously there's a typo in the first reply and do not recommend was intended...)

Hi SC,
Sorry we recommend the Samsung T7 Shield 4TB SSD as some users reflected it was not stable to use.
You can buy the Sandisk Extreme or Sandisk E61 pssd, the SSD size doesn't matter, you can choose based on your needs.

Yes, some users reflected the Samsung T7 Shield could not be recognised. as there are different types online for this SSD drive model.
Sandisk Extreme 4TB is okay.
So to confirm, currently the 'Recommended' SSD list now seems to be: Sandisk Extreme, in any capacity, and the WD 1TB My Passport.
I further replied suggesting that perhaps a 4TB model, i.e Sandisk Extreme, should be added to the website recommendations, I guess we'll see...
The official store in Russia wrote on the Russian-language forum that the problem is due to poor contact in some Ssd. According to their information, the problem is in the connector itself on the side Ssd. This explains the fact that everything works well for a while, and then stops working.

So far, everything works great with my external box. At the very beginning of using it, I had an issue with the controller inside the box overheating, The solution was to replace the standard thermal pads with thicker ones.

So basically Viofo blamed everyone else?

I think they themselves don’t know what’s going on, so there is no clear, direct answer.

Apologies if others have mentioned this, but there's a known issue with having a secure USB-C connection on Samsung Shield T7 SSDs--nothing to do with Viofo, but possibly why they've removed the Shield T7 from their recommended SSDs. The 4TB I'm using with my A329TC suffers from this but interestingly my 2TB does not. Even the Samsung cable the drive came with is loose. According to users, either capacity can have the loose connection issue but some have units that are fine. There are complaints from owners about random disconnects as a result from their computers causing data loss/corruption.

In my case I originally used thick rubber bands criss-crossed across the Viofo USB cable right angle end and the SSD itself but now use a more secure magnetic SSD mount from SmallRig that has a cable clamp. Seems to be working okay now after some issues with my cam not recognizing the SSD attached after a "cold" start and having to remove and then reconnect it for it to then be available (same with the rubber bands). I repositioned the SSD so the cable end wasn't touching anything under my dash, so that may have been what corrected that concern.
