Vueroid D40-Q2, Initial thoughts.

After taking the dogs out for their weekly 'long run in the dark', I noticed the camera LED's pulsing slowly as I got back to the car. A quick check on the phone app confirmed they were switched on - along with a few other settings back to default and the geofence location cleared.

Now, I think this is due to me opening the settings in the PC app, a lot of the settings available on the phone app are not available on the PC. Edit: I've just looked again, the settings are there but on a different tab, it's still unclear why they reverted to the default setting though. Whilst I didn't change any settings, I'm reasonably certain I saved the settings rather than cancelled to close the settings window. If that is the case, it's more something to be aware of than a problem.

One other issue I came across at the same time whilst downloading was the WiFi is only 2.4GHz - As I was previously downloading from inside the house, I presumed the lack of speed was due to the signal strength causing it to fall back to 2.4GHz, sitting in the car, there is no 5GHz WiFi with a Vueroid identifier.

The Vueroid website does state 2.4/5GHz WiFi, I can't see any configuration setting for it though.

Hi James, thanks for your clarification - it only took a single number of minutes to confirm lack of 5GHz WiFi, fortunately the Micro SD card extender works fine so if I ever have to download more than a couple of files it's easy to access the memory card.
I note the WiFi is via a USB 'dongle', is there an upgrade path to dual band by replacing the dongle?

The reason for posting this - my previous Thinkware ARC 900 and Blackvue Elite 9, both 4k front cameras, struggled with registration plate recognition where the oncoming car was a light colour or my headlights were illuminating the reflective rear plate. Whilst not a side-by-side comparison, I'm pleased that a 2k camera, in poor weather, can resolve the registration plates sufficiently to identify the vehicles.

Certainly. We have a plan to upgrade the product. Our primary focus is to enhance image quality by improving the camera interface.
We have not yet considered changes to the Wi-Fi communication, but I will review what improvements can be made. I agree that adding a dual-band Wi-Fi feature would be a reasonable and beneficial enhancement.

Thanks, it's good to hear that you intend to improve existing products rather than leave 'as-is' and just offer replacements.
The app is 'Vehicle Smart', it only resolves UK vehicle registrations and doesn't give owner details but is quite handy otherwise - for example, checking the MoT history.

Sorry to say that's not the correct licence plate. The car is a white VW Golf ID3, not a grey Renault Symbioz.

I've tried a few similar-looking plates but I can't identify the Golf.
 
Odd… I’ll download the video to my PC later and have a look at some other frames.
I did think ā€˜grey’ was stretching the colour palette somewhat.

Well, it's refreshing to have nothing to say other than 'working as expected', GPS lock is very quick, video quality is good and geofencing works reliably - I also had a notification that the PC viewer software has been updated to address the 'reset to default' concerns noted above.

I know there's a lot of threads with comments along the lines of 'this and that needs changing / doesn't work / not as expected' but for my criteria, this suits my needs - not perfectly, everyone wants 'just a little bit more' right? but on balance, it's head & shoulders above the other dashcams I've owned.

I've recently changed my car - same brand, same model, but plug-in hybrid (PHEV), today I refitted the D40-Q2 into the new car, different screen equipment means the location would probably 'hide' a S1-4K quite well - I'll stick with the D40-Q2 for now though.
Given the way the 12V batteries are charged (DC-DC converter), the charge is always =>80%, and not needed for starting the engine (this is done by the starter/generator using the PHEV battery pack above -5°C) is there a setting for the voltage cut-off specific to these circumstances?
I'm thinking that the external battery pack setting will be the most useful in not missing any parking events.
Any advice?
 
Possibly some confusion - I don't *think* I need an external battery pack, the Vueroid seems happy with any voltage on the +BATT line and determines parking mode by the status of the +ACC line, as long as the voltage is above the cutoff point, it seems to accept the vehicle being 'parked' as long as the +ACC is near 0VDC
I was thinking that the lower cut-off voltage setting for a battery pack would prevent any parking mode low power shutdowns as the vehicle is very unlikely to get to that low a voltage, without a battery pack being in circuit.
 
As far as I recall, it wasn't recommended to connect a dash cam with parking mode in hybrid cars due to the small battery capacity...

If memory serves, the "setting for use with an external battery pack" will drain the battery down to 10 volts.

Although, I might be misremembering...

The HV hybrid battery will be used to charge the 12V starter battery via the DC-DC converter (the only charging mode for the 12V batteries) so as far as the dashcam is concerned, there is a near-infinite current supply, the Vueroid, I think, has an 11V shutoff for battery packs - 10V IMO is too low.

I don't have that dashcam, but in the S1 series, the App has a voltage setting where you can choose ICE (internal combustion engine) or EV (electric vehicle). Is there something similar for your D40? I never set it below 12vdc on my Outback.

I believe the standard recommendation is to set the EV voltage cutoff to be 0.2VDC above what you would set for an ICE vehicle. So, if you like 12VDC for ICE, then set 12.2 for EV.
 
That's probably a good rule of thumb for BEV's - for hybrids (MHEV/PHEV) the setup is slightly different in that they have starter/alternators, some also have conventional starter motors, so the starter battery has to be sufficiently sized. BEV's have a relatively small 12V battery as it's only there to keep the vehicle systems running until the EV side kicks in, and charges the 12V battery by a DC-DC converter.
I wouldn't be comfortable drawing any starter battery (AGM, EFB, EFB+ etc.) below 12.4VDC, a battery pack with different chemistry will most likely be repeatedly recoverable down to 11VDC - but not a 'car' battery.
There is no specific EV setting on this camera, I'm thinking of using the '11V external' setting, which is as good as 'off' as the battery voltage will never get that low. Even now, after having the doors open all afternoon, radio on and liftgate up & down repeatedly, the BMS is holding it at 12.7VDC, with negligible impact upon the PHEV high-voltage battery.

I have an AGM Odyssey AGM24M, 76 AH with 840 CCA, so your starter battery is slightly larger than mine. I have a LVC at 12VDC, and I have three 2-channel dashcams in the car, and sometimes five dashcams. I have yet to run out of battery using a Vueroid S1 product. I do, about once a month, put my AGM on the CTEK and condition it overnight, or at least 14 hours.
