Hi everyone, apologies if this has been asked before. Is there a dashcam that has insanely good night time quality that can pick up license plates? Assuming price isn't an issue, does a dash cam like this exist? Or is the technology not there yet? Thanks for your time.

Night time is a problem for any dashcam. The ones that do best are using the latest Sony Starvis 2 image sensors with HDR, still not guaranteed to catch plates at night, but the chances are a lot higher. Try looking up the Viofo A139 Pro, or, if you are only at the looking stage, the upcoming Viofo A229 Pro.

Welcome to the forum.

Yeah what you ask are a tall order, at least if we talk about regular in traffic speeds, that is virtually impossible with current technology.
Little signs of hope are there with the new Sony starvis 2 sensors, but really it is not something i would put any bet on.
Mind you. You Americans have made it even harder for yourself with the small plates on cars with additional graphics on, and often only one of those plates on the car.
At least you have to be mindful about that seeing Euro boys capturing plates at night.

There are not really any dashcam that are significantly better than any other camera on the market, CUZ they all use the same hardware, and its not like any of the brands have a strong secret sauce they can put on firmware to bettyer things.

Overall you might be able to find something that can do better, but then it is not a dashcam, and if that hardware was put in a dashcam well instead of a system being a few 100 dillers it will probably end up as a couple of 1000 dollars system.
And even then it would not be small like dashcams, and handling the heat dashcams see in general use might also be a problem

The ability to read a number plate at night when you are driving on the road aqt high speed is about the same for all high end dash cams as they usually use the same hardware. The software may make a slight difference, but often the difference is minimal if you are driving after a car. What you pay a difference for on high end dash cams are mostly quirks for operation and how they can be set up, WiFi, GPS, appearance, etc., etc.

All high end dash cams should not have the big problems getting license plates on video when you stop/drive in a parking lot even if it is half dark, the same applies if you drive slowly on the smaller roads.

However, you should not expect that a rear-facing camera can get the writing on quite a few license plates when it is dark due to the harsh light from the headlights of a vehicle behind.

You can also say it in the way that number plates out on the road at high speed when it is dark almost seems like operation impossible , but in a few cases it succeeds.

Thanks for your input everyone, really appreciate it!
