More than my wife thinks I need.
Something I posted in the 'Pics That Make You Smile' thread got me to thinking (dangerous, I know) about how much technology has changed in the last 10 to 15 years.

In December 2001 a 1GB IBM Microdrive (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Microdrive) had a retail price of $360*. At the time it was half the price of CF memory cards which sold for $130 for 256MB - or $520 per 1GB (if a 1GB version would even have been available).

Scaling the CF size up to 128GB would result in a price tag of $66,560. This is in 2001 dollars - moving forward to 2017 and adjusting for inflation a 128GB memory card would cost $90,202. :eek:o_O

Moral of this story (if there is one)? Memory is cheap now - just buy it. :)

* - All prices are US dollars

I remember selling 512MB no-name flash drives imported from China for up to $300 ($200 as per current rates) back in 2003, handsome margins too. Gigabytes were hard-drive only territory.

I remember the first PC hard drive i got, 1.3 Gb and that was a substantial drive back then, actually the 610 Mb hard drive on my Amiga was still up there too.

The biggest platter hard drives out there now are just  sadly so are their prize, but damn i would like one of those in a USB 3.0 housing, but i would even take it raw as i can shoehorn a drive like that into my modified case if need be.

The very first hard drive I bought was a 10MB (yes, that's MB not GB) drive to put into a dual 5 1/4" floppy drive, 8088 IBM clone PC - this was about a year after IBM came out with their first PC. To put that in perspective today Adobe Photoshop CS3 takes about 300MB to install, and the Windows 7 folder on my laptop eats up 18.3GB.

That hard drive set me back a bit over $600. :(

My first computer was a 386Dx .. ( DOS 5 )
500Meg HDD 2meg of ram , 5.25 Floppy . did it run about 33mhz ? ( In Turbo ? ) and a monochrome monitor .. ( 1993 )
In 1995 it was upgraded to a Pentium 1 200mmx , 6gig HDD , 256mb of ram with a 3.5 floppy and a CD drive .. Running ................ Windows 95
And that was the last computer I purchased , all after that were Upgrades or DIY ..

WOW , TNT graphics , Voodoo graphics , GForce graphics ...
So many flight sticks worn out playing Red Baron 2 and then Red Baron 3D ...

The very first computer ever to come into my house was a Radio Shack (Tandy) TRS-80. The school my kids attended had 2 or 3 of them the students could request to take home for a weekend and one of them (kids) got lucky and was selected. It came into the house about 4:00pm on Friday and I don't think it got turned off until about 7:00am Monday so it could be returned.

Also, the first video 'game' I ever owned was a Magnavox Odyssey.

I cant remember the first game ..
But Wolfenstein .... ( So many hours on Wolfenstein )
Then of course I had to get Wolfenstein 2 ( oh man ! )
I think there is a new one out now .. ( The new order )

When I upgraded my 386x Win98 (overclocked to a whopping 90MHz) to a 1.2G HD I could not even come close to filling it up. Now my OS alone can't even fit on something that small. Funny thing is that my old machine did everything I do as fast or faster than this fancy newfangled one and they call that forward progress :p

I still have the first pen drive I bought, a 256MB USB 1.1 Iomega. It was one of the first 256MB flash drives to appear on the local market and it cost me almost €60!

This was around 14-15 years ago. What size flash memories can you buy today with €60? Exactly!

I have an original Quantum Fireball HDD 1GB lying around somewhere.

Ironically these drives ran like fireballs.
