It is dark but the A118 footage does look really sharp tbh which I like - will get mine hooked up later hopefully (assuming it is the A118 and not some more dirty Chinese porn that's sat on my desk at work!)

From the pics provided by mike-k, the night ones especially are a concern but I think i'll take jokiin's advice and wait to see before I start getting to concerned... Though I do think I will get one of the phone polarized films I mentioned earlier as a stand by...... I got the Samsung Evo 32gb micro sd to go in the a118.

On the Hongkong post tracking site it says the item arrived in the UK on the 30th so now hoping it gets through whatever it has to get through asap, would be nice to have it here for the weekend so I can get it set up ....

I think the night results are acceptable, the more ambient light there is the more you'll see, what's happening outside of the areas within the range of your headlights is nowhere near as relevant as what's happening within that space

Well, speak and it shall arrive... Just been delivered so can now get it set up and tested....

It is so much smaller that I expected it to be and can defo see now I have it in my hands why this is the best form for a dash cam..

go to page 23 of this thread and check my videos. night performance is pretty good, imho. if you want much better you'll need military style green night vision which ain't cheap.

there's certainly cameras which perform better at night, these are still quite usable though and will generally see as well as you can yourself under the same lighting circumstances, I think some of the other positives, form factor, size etc make up for some of that and make it a decent proposition still

niko's comparison video shows that the A118 has the least impressive low-light capabilities of the four cameras.

Which is not to say that I don't like the A118. I like its size & form factor. I like it's daylight performance & price.

If it becomes available with capacitor & improved low light video quality, I would nominate it for 'Best Budget DashCam'. I believe that jokiin intends to make this a reality in the near future.

We are doing a modded version, we're not going to be doing it online out of China though, it's for the retail market in Australia so the price will be higher, that said though it will still be cheaper than some of what it will be sitting next to on a retail shelf so in that space it will still be a cheaper option

if someone from here wanted one though I'm sure we could work something out

Wow - ok I'd not appreciated how small this thing was - I thought it was twice the size from the pics I've seen. If this is this small the Mini's really are ridiculously tiny!

Looking forward to giving this a whirl :)

do you have a link to that comparison video? which 4 cameras? i haven't really ventured out beyond this (a118) sub-forum so while i'm sure there's plenty of useful info out there, i just can't digest it all that fast.

thanks. somehow i completely missed the link in the post at the top of this page.

i think even if i'd seen that comparison before buying, i still would have bought the a118 based primarily on form factor and also on price. sure the mobius and mini080x are also small but mobius doesn't have a screen nor does it come with a mount, and the mini (both 0801 and 0803) are more expensive, but i do like their mount system. compared to the others, the a118 is certainly "good enough" at night. i'm happy with it, and that's waht counts.

that said, my wife just called and said the camera fell off the window again. so i think i'll be putting on some new tape as well as scraping the black dot area with a razor blade to rough up the dots and give the tape something better to grab onto. at least the camera doesn't fall very far before it comes to rest against the mirror, so it's still at least 75% effective and will still record if anything happens.

When you put the tape on press and hold the mount firmly for a few minutes and leave about 20 minutes before you put the camera on, the tape reaches 50% bond in around 20 minutes, 100% takes 72 hours

... and also clean the area thoroughly with some "white gas" (if possible), and let the Area dry out before sticking the new tape on it; if you touch the area, clean again... And the tape and windshield should have about the same temperature, otherwhise it will fail again soon...

(believe me; had to try it for more than 5 times until the camera (well: the tape) did have a good hold on the windshield... Fortunatly, I had enough tape as I had to buy a black one, as the grey 3m-stich would have been to obvious 'cause everything else in the interior is black... To ensure the temparature, I just left the tape inside the car for a few hours)

Which tape would you recommend as a replacement for the 3m VHB if it does fail to hold?

I bought the "housebrand" of local "homedepot"; cheap stuff, but kinda stichy after all ;)

Tesa has a Powerstrip-variant for Cars, in Switzerland it's called "AUTO fix" (when this stuff holds as strong as the Powerstrips, they might be a good alternative)... Maybe you can get this in GB, too?

Edit:
It's most probably availabe in the United Kingdom - as seen here

that's what i did - pres and hold a couple minutes, then left it alone for a day before sliding the camera on. it held for a week or so before falling again. gonna clean everything real good, scrape the dots, put new tape on the mount and use some adhesive promoter this time. if it still falls, it won't be for lack of effort on my part.
