A229 Pro Overheating

Yeah, mine during the summer time with 3 channel recording would go from 6am to about 11-11:30am before shutting off in the Summer time, definitely not ideal if you want more consistent parking recording.

1. Has anybody tested power consumption savings in parking mode with GPS off?
2. Why would anybody care about GPS in Parking mode?

1. Has anybody tested power consumption savings in parking mode with GPS off?
Yes, I have.
The results are in my testing threads.
This feature started with the 5-Pin GPS mounts available starting with the original A229 Duo (2022), and original A119 Mini (2022).
2. Why would anybody care about GPS in Parking mode?
Because disabling the GPS module in Parking Mode offers reduced power consumption increasing parking mode run times, also any reduction in power consumption also reduces heat generation.
Since you're parked you don't need SPEED & GPS COORDINATES since most likely the car will be in the same place when you return, (unless it gets stolen / impounded / towed away etc).
Because they're struggling to find real problems to worry about. 😀
Correct. lol

The last post I found regarding GPS power testing in the A229 Pro Test & Review PP thread was Post # 449 on page 23 of 39 but VIOFO had not yet provided "Disable GPS in parking mode" yet.

Post # 289 kind of answered the question showing 140 mW average power from the entire camera assembly including the GPS. The assumption would be most of the power is for the GPS when the unit is powered off. I could use my Powercell 8 app to get a ROUGH idea how much current the camera draws with GPS off vs on in parking mode since I think VIOFO did add the GPS disable capability.

Or perhaps I just missed @Panzer Platform actual test results. I struggle a bit with the "advanced search" feature.

That might work.
But, it might not.
What camera do you have?
I might test this later today.

I have the A229 PRO 2 channel with Powercell 8.
Also a A229 Plus 2 Ch
And I just got an E360 from Vantrue!
I'm sadly addicted :woot:

I attempted to use my Powercell 8 app to measure current in parking mode vs driving mode.
In both cases the reading was 0.4A

The resolution is 0.1 A and accuracy is questionable. In any case, I would not expect the GPS unit to contribute meaningfully to overheating issues especially since it's physically outside the main unit. The more relevant comparison would be battery run time with and without GPS.

Please be more specific so I can duplicate your configuration exactly.
A229 Pro 2-CH "REAR" or 2-CH "INTERIOR"
A229 Plus 2-CH "REAR" or 2-CH "INTERIOR"
The setup I was referring to where I measured 0.4 A (both driving and parking) using my Powercell 8 App was A229 Pro 2 CH REAR
But I do question the accuracy of this reading.

Yes I am excited to test the E360!

I'd also love to see a test of the E360! especially since those of us down under couldn't purchase the pre-sale. Especially things like its performance in parking mode 😀 and how it compares quality wise to a traditional 2/3 ch cam

I am having issues with my A229pro overheating. Firmware is up to date; having this problem in BOTH of my vehicles. Units are hardwired with the Viofo hardwire kit. Central Florida and we're just heating up. So far not impressed with this.

My old A129 Plus Duo could run 24/7 in the middle of the summer heat at 98+ degrees, WITH a sunshade up and have no issues. Temperatures are in the low 80's! It even happens with the car running and AC on. What gives?

Can you post some pictures with the installation and how it is used that sunshade?

I flashed to 241206 in December of 2024 and have noticed my A229 Pro seems to be hotter than what it should be for the current temps. I am using a telephoto and interior camera, max bitrate, GPS module, and a 256GB memory card. I have saved copies of earlier firmware and will step back a firmware version.

Haven't noticed any issues here, then again it's Australia and the summer heat makes everything hot haha. Hopefully the issue isn't that bad with everyone else's units.

I have had a few days in the 10c range, the screen has gotten quite hot, memory card almost hot enough to burn the fingers and, I am starting to get a squeal again when the AM is used on the radio. I have noticed that when I pull the interior cam USB from the A229 the squeal goes away, not sure if the heat lessens though. I will probably check the thermal paste on the camera this weekend. Will probably swap out the interior cam/usb cable with the spare.

Squealing definitely sounds like some kind of electrical interference, doesn't explain the camera getting hot though. Replacing the thermal paste might reduce the temps by a few degrees Celsius but not expecting much.

Either way, if the memory card and screen are that hot in 10C weather, something definitely isn't right with the camera. I'd expect that in hot climates like here right now not cool ones

Is there anyone from Viofo that can investigate this issue? We have had several "cooler" days in Central Florida and I have had ZERO issues with the cameras shutting down. Starting on Tuesday of this week the temperatures were back up (mid 80's) and now I'm getting shutdown's starting around 11am when the vehicles are parked outside.

I have this issue going on with BOTH of my A229 pro's in two separate vehicles, with tinted windshields. Parking mode and regular recording, the cameras overheat and shut down. When I get in the vehicle in teh afternoon, turn on the AC, the cameras will shut down several more times as I'm driving until they finally cool down some.

I have quite a penny tied up in both cameras, wiring, etc. I'm not a happy camper now regaring this crap. They are now blaming a "non-viofo branded" SD card on the overheating. Absolute BS.

I will get some tomorrow of the 229pro. I have a 70% tinted windshield that has 90%? IR heat rejection, with a 5% 'eyebrow' strip - this significantly reduces the heat coming through the windshield. the camera is fully mounted behind the additional 5% strip of tint and the only part exposed on the 70 % tint is the actual lens looking forward. Same setup on both my cars.

The old A129 Plus Duo, that I should have kept in the main vehicles is now in my 20 year old Avalon. It runs 24/7, facing the sun while parked outside and a cheap foil sunshade up when the car isn't being driven recording on the cheapest Samsun 250gb card I could find. Z E R O issues. The interior of that car is probably 2x hotter than the ones I have the 229 pro's in due to the lack of window tint.

Viofo sent me a firmware update and logging software. I am still getting overheating issues; outside temperatures are in the mid 70's this week and low humidity. The interior of the vehicle is not exactly 'hot' by any standards.

Here is a clip of my log file
