I'd want it to switch down to 1080p and no interior camera on parking mode, for less heat and longer battery.

The A229 Pro/Plus has the ability to turn off the internal camera in parking mode.

FYI:

1. Using a laptop heatpipe for transfering heat to an exposed copper plate on the housing. It's up to the dashcam model so we can do this step with internal heatsink. A229Pro heatsink has large fins so it's easier.
2. On A229Pro, creating a hole (next to the exposed plate) that's big enough and suitable for the actual positions of blower fan + radiator.
3. Installing the blower fan+radiator with correct blowout direction so the hot air will get through the raditor.
4. Tapping the cord of HK4's Type C connector for powering the fan, with a speed regulator+off button (to reduce fan noise in the cabin as well as in the recordings).

The idea is using a blower fan (40x70x7, ~1w) to draw out the hot air inside dashcam, blowing through a radiator for better efficiency. The heat is transfered to external radiator also. Other external heatsinks can be attached depending on the actual dashcam postion in car, just for the case of not running the fan, the dashcam (parking mode) still works.
EX: My 3-channel parking mode with the heatsinks only (no fan): max on-chip temp is 94°C at outdoor temp of 27°C.
 
Such model is not selling at all. The idea is good but people are not buying such models. Our opinions on this forum about a remote DVR is different from real life market.
 
Update. As an experiment I dropped the resolution down to 1080p and i was able to run it in 2CH mode without any shut-down despite it being 95F outside today.

Both. The A229 Pro doesnt seem to have any option for selection resolutions for the individual cameras. I figured that this would at least be better in the temporary until I figure out a hardware based solution. (ive been looking into ceramic heat shields, but so far no luck finding one the right size)

oof. I'm still in my first few days with the A229 Pro. I'll be completely honest in saying that if it starts overheating when running 4k front and 2k rear, it'll go back to Amazon.
 
Yea, i wasn't thrilled when it started happening after a few months of ownership. Took me a bit to figure out what was causing it. Ive had it happen any time the camera sits in direct sunlight for an extended period and outside temperature is above (approximately) 85F and i try running at resolutions above 1080p. As for returning it and getting something else, the only camera ive run across that reviews indicate can do 4k decently in the heat is the Thinkware U3000. Unfortunately every example ive seen of that camera's night-time video quality has been absolutely terrible.

In that case, I might never experience it. If it's that hot during the day (and my car is parked outside), I tend to remote start my climate control and let it run for 10-15 minutes before I even think about getting in.

As long as your not using it in parking mode and also as long as remote starting like that doesn't also power on the dash cam itself, then yea, i think youll be fine since ive never had any issues once the cabin cooled down a bit.
 
What was the final verdict on the overheating issues? I'm currently in the market for a 3ch dashcam and have ordered the n4 pro since it was on a BF sale. Although after seeing the somewhat cult following viofo has (lol), I have been thinking about sending the n4 pro back and going with a A229 pro 3ch. After what I assume were some punks slashing tyres in a shopping centre carpark, I am looking to use it in parking mode using motion detection as a sensor so I can prevent that from happening again, meaning this overheating issue would be a compelete killer for me. Can anyone provide an update on this?

Think it was much the same verdict in the time since. Viofo did release a firmware update maybe six months ago that displays a temperature warning before turning the dashcam off, but I've also run the N4 Pro in my car in the hotness here in Australia. a229 pro shut off but N4 Pro never did

To be honest, I'd rather the Viofo shut down in extreme temps to protect the hardware over the Vantrue's approach. Make what conclusions you will, as you are using it for parking mode though...

Thanks for the response 🙂 Most of my parking is at work in a covered shopping centre car park for up to 8 hrs on somedays. What sort of outdoor temps do you think it would take for the A229 Pro 3ch to shutdown in that sort of setting, based on your experience with the camera? i.e. Only days where its 30c+ or more common than that?

Yeah I was going pretty hard, we talking temps where I am at a covered work carpark for eight hours then 35C and above driving under the sun for half an hour, before it starts exhibiting the shutdowns.

If you're parking mode is undercover most of the time I'd imagine you would be just fine
 
In my case (no external cooling):
3-channel parking mode (AED): outside temp 27C, on-chip temp: 97~100C (after 5 hours)
2-channel parking mode: outside temp 27C, on-chip temp: 95~97C

As I remember, a229pro will shut down at the on-chip temp of 105C(?) lasting in 10 seconds, so at outdoor temp 35C, I guess it will shut down after 2-3 hours
