Would be normal as your lights reflect off the plates and obscure the letters Quite logical if you think about it A torch square on will do the same.

No always. All depends on numberplate surface colour. Read my thread I left link above. I'v tried to explain different situations there.

Read that and almost all plates in Australia are either white or yellow . Therefore if you are in direct line you wont read them. Try driving to one side a bit and see if it makes a difference
