Scott Morrison - Australia's "day of hope", as he signs a letter of intent with UK-based drug company AstraZeneca to manufacture 25 million doses of Oxford University's COVID-19 vaccine for Australia:
An explanation of why our immune systems make the antibodies disappear after a while:
He said he expected there would be "long queues, socially distanced of course" to get the vaccine, which would be "the absolute ticket to get back to some sort of normal society and the things that we all love and enjoy."
"Certainly, we've got to get about 95 per cent [coverage] and so we'd be applying that as well [as] taking medical advice ... but that's what I would be expecting," he said.
"You would expect it to be mandatory?" host Neil Mitchell then asked.
"I would expect it to be as mandatory as you can possibly make it. There are always exemptions for any vaccine on medical grounds, but that should be the only basis," the Prime Minister replied.
The Prime Minister said Australia would also "play an important role in supporting our Pacific family" after discussions with the prime ministers of Papua New Guinea and Fiji, along with Indonesian President Joko Widodo.
'Open to all options' to ensure a strong take-up of COVID-19 vaccine, PM says
Trials of the vaccine candidate and manufacturing agreements were "well advanced", Scott Morrison said on Wednesday.
