Hello everyone,
this Dashcam world seems like a giant nightmare at first, but i went ahead and purchased my first and only car dashcam recently.
After reading alot and looked on prices i got a pretty good deal on N2X from Vantrue on their webpage, with 512 sd-card included plus some sort of reflector lence.

I pair the dashcam with a SiGN Powerbank 30 000 mAh (USB-C) and just wired a fast setup for testing inside the car for a few days. What i ended up with is

~2 hours 20 minute of footage in Parking Mode with Motion Detection set to High, 1920x1080p @ 30 fps and pretty much default on the other settings for the N2X dashcamera.
187 pieces of 80MB recordings were each was 45 seconds in duration. When i clocked my powerbank battery 1 day took the powerbank down to about 60%.

Is this a good setup? Should i buy a stronger powerbank like 50,000 mAh instead to get more motion detection recordings out of my dashcamera?
Right now it seems like other cars are entering the garage building, triggering the lamp sensors in the ceiling which triggers the motion detection on my N2X. Is there any firmware tool to finetune the Motion Detection area for the dashcamera. Could be manufacturer or custom made for the community, prefarrable open-source software if there is any existing such.

Thank you so much,

Welcome to the club @grumpyBear
First, and foremost if your “powerbank” is Li-ion, or Li-Polymer it is not suitable to be left in a hot parked car, (explosion fire hazard).
That’s why we have LiFePO4 (Lithium Iron Phosphate) Dash Cam Battery Packs.
They are a completely different battery chemistry.
Basically they are 100% guaranteed to never explode into a ball of fire.

välkomna till grumpyBear.

As Chuck said be careful with lipo based power banks, in general cheap brand power banks ( not familiar with this in general so your SIGN are just a unknown to me )

In general motion detect have never been good in dashcams no matter the brand, it generally trigger too often
I personally prefer the low bitrate mode which granted record all the time but then in a lesser bitrate so the camera do not have to work as hard, beside this i also prefer to have G-sensor on while parked to flag any actual events / hits.
But G-sensor will not sense something little like for instance someone keying your car.
But this is also easy for me to say / do as i generally also have a 3 hour timer countdown if in the system or if that is not possible i use the highest possible cut off value CUZ at home i have CCTV on my car parked in the back yard ( from my 2 floor apartment balcony door )
Optical zoomed in with the 1400p CCTV camera i have a high chance of a identifying capture, and with IR light at night only severe fog or rain / snow will stop me, but the same will also make a car with parking mode dashcam parked outside useless.

I am using the 70mai power bank myself it is just 7500 MAH as i recall so do not last very long
Some in here are using the huge portable power banks normally used in campers ASO, i think personally if i was to get a need for long duration parking guard i would put a #2 battery in my car ( AGM type as they can handle deeper discharge which kill regular lead / acid batteries )
And then have a isolator so that battery are only charged when running and isolated when the car is stopped so only the dashcam can use its power.

Regarding the dedicated dashcam power packs, some can daisy chain and so expand on their capacity, IMO that should be standard, but is not there on my 70mai for instance.

Thank you guys for the welcoming!
Hm i live in a colder country, so i dont think (i hope atleast?) that the temperature would be a problem. Mostly will be using the parking mode when parked in mall garage, or at home in the garage building which is concrete and ventilated. :bookworm:

But on a side note, i also have a Home recording camera setup from TP-link called TP-Link Tapo C425. And thats a kinda small camera that is cordless, powered by its own battery and charges by USB-C.
and it will last up to 365 days using IR, motion detection, night vision, Thief alarm sound system, Wi-Fi and all that in 2K QHD @ 2560×1440

I feel a 30,000mAh powerbank should last more than just 2 hours and 20 minutes of motion detection clips for comparison with my above setup that i explained in the Topic.
Or am i missing something, why does it feel dashcams quality not so good compared to the wireless home camera i have from Tapo series (TP-link) which ive had recording everyday when i come home for 200 days and its still at 88% battery.

@Chuck McCoy i watched the videos you posted and i certainly do not want that to happen, to either my car, or to the households. I specifically looked up my powerbank and it said
Material: Fire-resistant, Over-voltage protection, over-temperature protection, short circuit protection and Case fireproof protection.

How do i know if my powerbank is of that fire explosive material that could cause this? Here is the manual for the powerbank

Thank you so much,

Hey there neighbour and thank you for your fast reply too.
Hm i wonder which mode is for me, ive only been testing this setup for 5 days and adjusting the settings to maximize my Motion detection ratio. But maybe low bitrate mode is better in this case, but wouldnt that cause more stress/heat from the powerbank to always be recording? than just have Motion Detection triggering. Maybe im all wrong but in my mind it feels like it

I tried googling around for portable lifepo4 battery packs (powerbanks alternatives) but i cant seem to find any good options with USB-C like i have right now. Which was the biggest deal for me when purchased my SiGN USB-C 30000 powerbank
since it was no struggle in installing it. Just connect it to the dashcam and route the cable and it was mounted in a matter of seconds. :/

another battery is kinda a big no for me, i have a old BMW E39 540i and it has the battery placement in the luggage trunk sidewall, and with minimal place for anything else than the battery and some bigger audio cables.

The good thing with the low bitrate is it do not generate as much heat as processor need less power to do its encoding and the files are also much smaller as a consequence of that, first time i tried it on a 1080p dashcam back in the day i was apprehensive.
So i went to a local road where i could park at the curb and still have cars pass with a 60km/h speed limit, and it worked just fine.

Also in low bitrate the camera also record sound, though as i recall vantrue pair that with low framerate too and so no sound in their cameras.

But still in regard to power consumption it is one of the more " thirsty " modes.
The best in regard to power saving is some of the new models, using the G-sensor to wake up on, and even if they are in a deep sleep using just 1 digit watts, they generally wake up and is recording within 2 seconds.
With that low power usage while " off " you can get far.

I am familiar with big audio cables, in the 90ties i drove a Opel kadett 1.6 GT from 1986, it is amazing i do not have any hearing loss really, big 12 " subwoofers on 500 W amps for each.

It’s not at risk like in the safety video.
However, once you put a Li-ion, or Li-Polymer device in a parked car, windows up, no ventilation, under direct sunlight, the passenger compartment can reach temperatures hot enough to cook Köttbullar.
This is when you get kablamo.

I'll have good news for you in about two hours.

Wouldn't the low bitrate mode keep recorded clips in continuation inside the SD memory card. So i'll end up with thousands of clips instead of just ~90/187 as from Low/High Motion Detection Parking Mode. :/
Ive actually tested the G-sensor as 5/5/5/5 from all angles in the Vantrue Settings, and the detection was zero (0) so far, and battery was still 100%, so that seemed to be working alot better for my setup. Even though i personally value the ability to be able to record (Motion Detection) people walking very close to my car, or moving around my car in a weird way. As if they gonna attempt a breakin later on, or for such scenarios like when a child is playing ball that gets shot at my car by accident. Even though it never happened YET, i might aswell trade-in my 30k PowerBank solution for a better suited more heavy alternative?

Yeah i have 3000 W amps, 12" subwoofers and upgraded every 6.5 device to 7 something in my E39. So it plays really well = large battery + bigger cables too. Kinda oversized but i preferr going big or go home when i upgrade haha. 😎

I see hm, i think i payed liked 120$ for my C425, and got two of them for that price. And they sit right into sunlight in my apartment window, and so far after 1 year of continuous Motion Detection usage without charging (completely wireless) have 88% battery left. It seems like there must be an alternative in the "Dashcam world" for this kind of setup?

If i currently have that 30,000 mha powerbank with USB-C connector to my Vantrue N2x. What would be a bigger upgrade for me, in terms of LiFePO4 battery-pack. That would last me atleast 3-4 days of Motion Detection footage in Parked Mode.
Anything that is possible to be standalone, and using USB-C (or with adapters) is highly preferred. I usually never park my car in direct sunlight, or in hot zones, and since i live in Sweden the hottest (MAX) temperatures are like 86(F) ~30°C ever.

So i dont think i ever would be able to cook meatballs in my car, hopefully...😃

Thinking Home Security Cameras, and Dashcams are the same is like when Americans think all 44 countries in Europe are “the same”.

I’m not sure what else can be said.
It’s a safety risk & fire hazard to leave a Li-ion or Li-Polmer powerbank operating unattended in a parked car.

Low bitrate recordings, while being a parking mode is generally ending up in the regular files folder, very easy to spot due to their much smaller size.
And so they are of course also recycled out by age when the memory card is full.
I will agree i do not feel it is a parking mode useful if you are looking to cover longer periods of being parked, but overnight for a while to maybe catch a vandal would be fine.
But otherwise for general parking guard and long term i would prefer the new systems that sleep very deep and use milliamps of power and then wake up in a second or two when there is a G-sensor impact detected.
Mind you this mean a IMAPACT the G-sensor can feel, someone dragging a key all alongside your car is not much of a physical event so i think most systems in G-sensor mode would not catch that.

I tested a couple of 70mai systems with AI motion detect, and for several months using parking guard i only got a few events made, but this CUZ i used the AI meaning a person had to stand still in front of the camera for a while before a recording would happen.
So the recordings i got was people filling gasoline on the pump in front of me, and one case where i was shopping and 2 people met and stopped to talk right in front of my car parked 4 M from the supermarket entrance door.
So absolutely NO masses of false events, but then again how many vandals or worse stop up in front of your car, contemplate what they will do before they do it

My home CCTV system ( 1 camera aimed at my parked car in the back yard ) have smart motion detect, so only something vehicle or human shaped near my car will set off a notification, this camera of course record all the time and save to a 2 TB harddrive so got a fairly decent backlog.

Mind you the smart in the system do think Magpies are humans and there is a couple nesting in a tree in the back yard every year, if i was selfish i would snipe them, but i am good it is not that often they make a mess.
My biggest problem in regard to them is i might only sleep a couple of hours around noon every day, and that is the daytime when they are active, so i have had to disable notification sound in order to get a few hours of sleep.

One thing we haven't noticed here was whether you've confirmed that the dash cam is indeed going into parking mode on this power bank, especially if you're using a USB-C connection by the sounds of it. Some dash cams like BlackVue and VIOFO can if the correct setting is enabled, but others can't and will continue recording as if the vehicle is running. Many dash cams rely solely on an accessory signal to enter and exit parking mode, which all dedicated dash cam battery packs can provide.

I’ve been avoiding bringing this up on purpose until we bring resolution to the fire hazard of leaving Li-ion & Li-Polymer powerbanks discharging in a parked car.
Having to inform a new dashcam user they can’t safely use their $20 powerbank, and instead need to buy a Dash Cam Battery Pack for $200 is, (well you know what I mean).

Of course. I thought we hadn't received confirmation from OP yet, but as it turns out...
How do i know if my powerbank is of that fire explosive material that could cause this? Here is the manual for the powerbank
Unfortunately, it says right there in the manual that the battery is lithium polymer, so it's definitely unsafe to leave in a car.

It goes into Parked Mode (power saving) as it should with the powerbank. And when i switched to G-sensor mode (Collision detection) the battery stays solid 100% for over a day. The battery seem to be working just fine, but as i said above... What would be a suitable UPGRADE from my current setup, in terms of a LiFePO4 battery-pack, with USB-C connector. Can also be a battery-pack that is able to do some sort of conversion, but i really just want to connect to the actual Dashcamera using USB-C since its direct plug-in and ready to use scenario.

Is this an upgrade in terms of my current 30,000 powerbank (fire hazard i know as you pointed out 5 times).

on this it says, up to 30 hours using 1-channel camera setup (1.7W)

I rather purchase the "best" or strongest alternative right away. But which of those are the strongest in terms of Parking Mode usage, and using USB-C as power source directly between the device and my N2x dashcam, not hardwired to the car.
Which brands are solid and have good reputations? I tried googling but those two were the only ones coming up from big company names, and with mentions in forums.

/grumpyBear

I put some effort into searching around, and asking Copilot and ChatGPT for help in searching the Internet for suitable products

1. This looked promising, where you can actually buy 2 x, so i end up with - VIOFO BP100 + EP100 = ~196 Wh in total power to Parked Mode.

2. 2nd best would be the: 70mai Dash Cam Battery Pack from my understanding and reading

Then i also found these, camper/multiuse battery stations. But they seem higher in actual stored Power, so maybe one of these below also might be suitable for my case?

Jackery Explorer 500 v2

EcoFlow River 3 Plus

And as previous mentioned, the car is parked in a very cool/garage area in concrete and ventilation inside. I know you just want to be nice and bring the safety precautions up, but i think
my purpose and actual area of use is quite suitable for keeping the device in the car when its parked. Please correct me if im wrong, and i highly value your oppinions on the above products. 🙂

Any of those dash cam battery packs you found should be fine, but it really depends on the exact parking mode runtime you're looking for per charge. Since your dash cam is 2-channel (from what we could tell), it might not last the longest on the PowerCell 5 since it has the smallest capacity out of your selection. Higher capacities (including more expansion packs) will introduce the side effect of increased charging time, so you will also want to take that into consideration. We do have some customers who use LiFePO4 power stations but they tend to be overkill for the average commuter.

If you could let us know more about your driving patterns (during which the battery pack/power station can charge) and parking mode runtime requirements, we'd have a better idea of which product may suit you the best.

Also, based on what you mentioned about the N2X going into parking mode via USB-C on your existing power bank, does this mean it automatically switches if the vehicle has remained stationary for a certain amount of time?

Im leaning towards the Jackery Explorer 500 v2, since i then would have atleast 4 days of constant Motion Detection (Parked mode) for my N2x, based on readings on the Internet. But might aswell be up to 6-7 days based on what ChatGPT said when i posted my tested results using powerbank and what power it currently have. Uhm the

car is stationary, i lock it and it directly goes into Parked Mode using the USB-C powerbank. Whenever i wanna charge it i press the bottom left button once to stop the parking mode/recording. And connect using Vantrue phone app using its Wi-Fi
and clear the SD-card and looking for accidents. I found it easiest to look at the photos. Each time the Parking Motion detects and starts recording, it also captures a photo. Which helps alot when going through alot of files and dates to just see what is on the image. This was a really good setup, and ive seen many people on Reddit ask for this type of stuff. But everyone just keeps writing about "You need hardwire" which is kinda not true....

So far im using
1080p N2x front camera + lens
512GB memory card
Motion Detection: Low
G-sensor up/side/etc on 5
plex improvement on the image quality and high
LED lights turned off
Screen turned off or lowest settings dont remember but screen is only on when i enter Wi-Fi mode to go through the events
power saving

This will be a perfect setup for my case. I only drive my car on the weekends since its a "fun car" and not a daily driver. I park it in my residential private (Multi car garage) most of the times.
The setup would probably work just as good with 70mai and cigarette as charging. But i just want to max out the ammount of parking mode days in motion detection mode.

Off-topic: Im also looking into some Android mobile apps that can translate an older phone into a recording device. So whenever you leave your car for a short period the 2nd phone acts as a GPS/motion detection/alarm/recorder etc
and can send push SMS or Telegram API message to your primary phone when something is detected inside or near the car. As long as the 2nd phone is able to register the event. There is currently two projects im looking into which are "Haven" and "Neruppu".

But going the route with a heavier battery pack-station will probably make me sleep happy for a long long time. Will post an update as soon as i get my Jackery Explorer 500 v2 and tested it out with the N2x 🙂.

Thanks for the details. Yeah, we agree that a power station would be the way to go for this use case. Looking forward to hearing about your experience with the Jackery Explorer 500 v2.

Probably not the best idea to leave phones in cars either, even for short periods, for the same reason as Li-Po and Li-Ion power banks. Phones always use these battery technologies.
