As an experiment to see how the F1 performs with a fast lens compared to the original F2.8 160 degree lens, I borrowed an F1.6 lens from a Viofo A129 and installed it in the F1.

y4mmAOyTwkCMiSdE-aclndpPIyT_6rynBzT9ayk-A8Nwe_7dj_D_GX8VsKyhBgrTyMVee4eQXtCYNF65agAD-SvUH4CPBh_od1fwoJW56xQAURg1EZokMZDVqCtNHD4NRyg_g8-hO25C5N-_oM0KZwjevhPh8FyeylDvQrzpW9QMSbEnPNQ9Kf0PWXnLnHy_xTankfma3Ds7ucSJuFk6WJNig

First of all, the F1 has a 1/2.5" 8MP IMX317 sensor, whereas the A129 has a smaller 1/3" 1/2.8" 2MP IMX291 sensor. So I was rather surprised to find that there is absolutely no vignetting on the F1 when using this A129 lens. I was expecting a circle within a black frame and having to consider using the Zoom (crop) function on the F1, but actually I have been able to use the full-frame of the IMX317.

The FOV when using the A129 on the F1 is less than the 160 degree original F1 lens, and slightly more than the 130 degree FOV when used on the A129.

I am currently testing the MOD#1.3 FW for the F1 as developed by @Falsificator , so the initial results here are not recorded with official GitUp FW. This is just a quick experiment to determine whether further testing is worthwhile.

For comparison to help in evaluating this F1 camera & A129 lens combination, I have recorded side-by-side with my Mobius Maxi (F1.5 Lens B), and an A129 that is also running MOD FW and an F1.6 lens.

F1 : 4k 30fps 100Mbps (FW v1.2 MOD#1.3)
Maxi : 2.7k 30fps 60Mbps (FW 2.04 beta)
A129 : 1080p 60fps 24Mbps (FW 1.42 MOD-4Rf)

The F1 is recording more detail with less noise than the Maxi, although at a lower brightness. The A129 shows off its IMX291 with a much brighter scene, but highlights are blown and there is more blur and less detail.

Tomorrow I will take a look at daytime driving with this A129 lens on the F1.

Parameters of AGC can be changed and the picture will become much lighter, but it will become more noisy.
So I left this option. The action camera is often used during the daytime...

As always a very interesting comparison. Let's wait for comparison in daylight...

I'm rather happy with the balance between brightness and noise in this F1 test.

For daytime use, I agree with keeping noise to a minimum. Let's see how that works out tomorrow.

Great thread!
Good image from GitUp F1. Because the CMOS is bigger this is helping to obtain more details for the 4K video. Not only the 4K resolution is adding more details but the size of the sensor.
A lesson which should be learned by @viofo and @gitup : for an action camera is more easy to obtain a good image with a normal (small) CMOS like the one from F1 because an action camera is used most of the time in good light conditions. But a dashcam must be good also in low light conditions and this can be done only with a big CMOS and maybe a Starvis sensor.
Because of this, normally, a dashcam should cost more compared to an action camera. Is harder to obtain good images on dashcams because such images are studied frame by frame because in some situations the details are very important. With an action camera maybe you cannot see great a bird or a tree but for a dashcam reading a car license number can save the freedom to somebody.

enjoy,
Mtz

Yes. thats not the green they are, too bright / vivid across the board i think

We are testing a big aperture lens for F1, before mainly focus on the daytime IQ, we will also re-tune the night video quality with new lens.
Also now coming more 4K dash cam, we will do some comparison between them.
I saw even some 4K dash cam use 12MP or 16MP sensor, curious to see how it performs.

Is it necessary to reduce brightness for A129?

I think that reducing contrast would be better. I am using one of the DCTEAM firmware modifications on the A129.

I've tried a few different lenses on my F1 but none of them have been ideal. I would like to try this new lens when it's ready.

Will you be adopting some of the changes that @Falsificator is testing in his modified F1 firmware?

@gitup Any update on the faster lens for the F1?

We are still working on tuning IQ. We also took some time to develop this new lens.
Sounds promising. I was considering trying another third-party lens, but I think I'll wait for the new F1 lens.

I decided to have another go with the A129 F1.6 lens in the GitUp F1. This time I managed to get better focus, with much less softness at the edges. Combined with MOD#1.5+Sharp FW by @Falsificator , this camera setup is looking rather good.
